Useful facts -
Jersey was occupied by Germany from 1 July 1940, and was held until 9 May 1945
It lies in the English Channel, approximately 22.5 kilometres (12 nm) from the Cotentin Peninsula in Normandy, France, and approximately 161 kilometres (100 mi) south of Great Britain.
As VAT has not been levied in the Island, luxury goods have often been cheaper than in the UK or in France, providing an incentive for tourism from neighbouring countries.
There is a very large Portuguese community on the Island mainly working in the hospitality industry.
