Oregon Tea Party members are taking a pledge of nonviolence for Friday afternoon’s Portland-area tax day rallies.

Party officials said they feared “union supporters” might try to stir up trouble at the rallies in Pioneer Courthouse Square and in other parts of the city on the day federal income taxes are traditionally due. (The deadline this year is midnight Monday, April 18.)

“In light of the recent violence experienced by Tea Partiers at events across the nation carried out by union supporters, we’re asking all Oregon Tea Partiers to take Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s 1963 Pledge of Nonviolence,” said Jeff Reynolds, Multnomah County Republican Party chairman. “Any anti-Tea Party violence will be met by an even keel of truth and justice.”

Tea Party members will rally beginning at 5:30 p.m. in Pioneer Courthouse Square for what they say is a day of protest against an “out of control, overspending federal government.”

Another rally is planned at 4 p.m. on Southeast Sunnyside Drive in Clackamas, near the Clackamas Town Center Claim Jumper restaurant.

The Pioneer Courthouse Square rally starts with live music and entertainment. Speeches are from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Sponsors include Multnomah County Republican Party, Americans For Prosperity, Oregon 912 Project and Freedomworks.

The event features Brian Futch and the local Patriotic group, We the Band. Scheduled speakers include KPAM 860 talk show host Victoria Taft, former U.S. Congressional Candidate and Oregon Tea Party Chairman John Kuzmanich, Kristina Ribali of Freedomworks, Matt Evans from Americans for Prosperity and Reynolds.

Comedian Stephen Kruiser of www.pjtv.com will entertain the crowd and Pajamas TV will stream the event on its website.

Loud and insistent
Reynolds said he had not heard any threats against the party or people planning to attend the rally, but he wanted to keep the peace in a heated political climate. Several other Tea Party rallies in the past two years have been marred by violence and “acts of thuggery by union members,” Reynolds said.

“Tea Party members pride themselves on remaining above the fray,” he said. “We are loud and insistent, but we never stoop to the level of physical violence.”

In addition, party members are keeping a close watch for former Beaverton middle school teacher Jason Levin, who created the “Crash the Tea Party” movement and encouraged his followers to infiltrate Tea Party events across the country while carrying racist signs and acting crazy.

Kuzmanich said the party had adopted a “zero tolerance policy” against expressions of racism to head off any trouble.

“If we see any racist or pro-violence message on a sign, we’ll know Jason Levin and his supporters are back,” Kuzmanich said. “We will politely insist that they leave.”

After publicity last year about Levin’s website and his anti-Tea Party movement, he left his job with the Beaverton School District.

KPAM 860 and the Victoria Taft Show are part of Pamplin Media Group, which also owns the Portland Tribune and Community Newspapers.
