I quit when I discoved I was pregnant with this boy who came April 2. Circumstances are getting me back into smoking. I had smoked 7 years when I got pregnant. The last 5 years, I smoked around 2 packs a day.
Visiting at my parents over the weekend, me and the 3 other girls I hung with gathered with kids at the park. Mine is the youngest.
In our senior year in high school. Jennifer, Melissa and Stephanie were smoking. We started in high school all non-smokers intent of being good athletes. My friends did not develop the speed and coordination I had. By my senior year, they were smokers and not in sports. I was star on this volleyball team winning only half its games.
In a weak moment, I joined the group for a cigarette. Next day we played a match and beat a strong team. I smoked another. It turned out to be a good year.
I kept on smoking. When I turned 18 in October, I bought a pack and told my mother I was a smoker. I mean she had been a smoker and my older sisters were.
Jennifer's first baby is 7 now. They are also 5, 3 and 1. She says that's enough. Jen quit smoking with the first pregnancy and showed no interest in going back to smoking.
Melissa had a baby 3 years ago, smoking through the entire pregnancy. When she returned to work, she was selected to fill a management opening. No one on the management team smoked so she quit, too.
Stephanie never stopped smoking. Her only child is 4 years old.
Sitting at the park we decided to have a cigarette for old times sake. Stephanie made the offer. Before leaving, I had 3 and Jennifer 4. Melissa stopped at one.
Next day my sisters and families came over. Oldest sister, Tiffany, is 34. She has tried to kick the habit but smokes and lets her 12-year-old daughter smoke.
I took a Marlboro from Tiff. Kristin, the other sister is 30 and has quit smoking. She wisely did not have a cigarette.
On the way back, I bought a pack of Newport Lights. I told my husband, who wants me to return to my 2 pack a day Newport habit, that I would not take my smoking to work because that would surely get me back into my old smoking habit.
Four different women have given me cigarettes at work. I bought a pack of the real Newports and had 5 yesterday. Then I went home and had 3 more. This weekend, we go to visit his family. They all smoke.
Our plan is to eliminate the precautions in November and have an August baby. I don't want to be a chain smoker trying to quit as I was last time.
It's so hard to say no.
