Subject: The Commissioner's 08-09 pre-season Basketball Outlook

AMERICAN DIVISION:

1. Don & Tommy J. – Never has team had some many questions at one position (FORWARD) as this team does on the 13 year history of the league. A) J.R. Inman – How long will his suspension last to start the season? The whispers are 3-5 games. That's up to Fred Hill. B) Shane Clark's knee just went under the scope on 11/6 and is expected to miss 4-6 weeks. C) Greedy Peterson did not play in PC's two exhibition games and Keno Davis appears more than likely to redshirt him this season. I hate to cast such a grim outlook on a team before the season starts, but they could actually play the first three weeks of the season without a single point from the Forward position. In reality they only have one hope of competing early & that is by trading either Luke Harongody or Alex Ruoff before Week 1 for some Forward help. If not, they will be most likely staring down the barrel of a 0-3 start before any reinforcements can be had.
2. Al Crawford & Tom B. – This team would love to make a return trip to the playoffs after tasting the post season in 2008. Big questions at Center. Can Garcia stay healthy for over 4 months? Can Burke contribute offensively? The rest of the team is solid & if they can get 8-9 ppg from their centers consistently, they will be right in the playoff hunt.
3. Bob Black & Matt – Similar questions. John Flowers & Alex Rivas Sanchez at Center. Unless Flowers surprises, this team needs to be working the phone lines to help out their explosive backcourt of Vaughn, W. Walker & Chandler to go along with two solid Forwards in Butler & Matthews.
4. Chris Terranova – I really like this team if Rosario is as good as advertised. Dar Tucker could be the breakout player of the year with the departure of Draelon Burns. The Center combo of Monroe & Zeller should be more than adequate in this division. Underrated.
5. Charlie Gregg – Which Randal Hanke shows up each night this year? Charlie needs consistency from Hanke and one of his other Forwards Nasir Robisnon or Wellington Smith to be solid contributors. A healthy Casiem Drummond could be his ace in the hole. Can Charlie avoid his traditional early season slide?
6. Chuck Treat – has anybody ever drafted a Center in the 1st round and in the 4th round? Chuck looks like he'll be having the last laugh. He did take another calculated gamble on Mike Mercer, who is not eligible until Week 5. If Price or Freeman get hurt early on, Chuck will have little option but to wheel and deal Samuels to shore up his backcourt. This is clearly the team to beat in the American Division and they'll only get stronger when Mercer becomes eligible.

NATIONAL DIVISION

7. Ryan Treat – The quickest backcourt in any league bar none (Flynn, Curry & Kemba Walker). A young team with three frontcourt players who are more than likely to post much improved numbers (Koshwal, Summers & Ayers). This team is certainly a title contender. They look strong on paper now, wait until February.
8. Jim Crawford & Brian – Another team with questions at Center. Backcourt is strong and will be even more menacing if Levance can get/stay healthy. Mason & Adrien provide a strong 1-2 punch at Forward. Depth is certainly a question here with Fields on the mend. Will need Center production to compete in this killer division.
9. Mike T. & Craig Q. – Defending champs have a very experienced team to try and defend their title. Will Thabeet post big offensive numbers? Can they get consistent production from either Jerry Smith or Efejuku? If those answers are yes, they will be a tough out.
10. Marty & Timmy – Dominic James in the 3rd round? He was the #2 overall pick two years ago. James will team with Earl Clark & Arinze Onuaku to provide the best 1-3 punch in the league. Can't keep these guys down long. Perhaps the team to beat in this division?
11. JK – Got good news when the NCAA cleared Gus Gilchrist to play in the second semester (Week 5) for USF on 11/5. Top Forwards in the league will carry the load with Stix Mitchell, Paul Harris & Mike Williams. The key question is Guard number 2? Will Brian McKenzie live up to his 4th round selection & will many teams regret passing on Corey Stokes until the 8th round? One must produce or it's NIT. The Commish will look to put a halt to his trend of hot starts and February fizzles in 2009.
12. Tom Hamel – We'll see if he's better off without Rich Hartnett? This team will certainly depend on some youth to be successful, especially with the two WVU Frosh Forwards in Ebanks & Jones. Pena & Wright are poised for breakout seasons. The backcourt of Harvey, Wright & Fisher is perhaps the most underrated in the league. A playoff contender for sure.

Best Starting 5: Tie - Marty/ Timmy – (Onuaku, Clark, Kennedy, James, Sapp/Xavier),
Ryan Treat (Koshwal, Summers, Ayers, Flynn, Curry/Walker)

Best Center Combo: Chuck Treat (D. Blair, S. Samules)

Best Forwards: JK (Paul Harris, Stix Mitchell & Mike Williams)

Best Guards: Ryan Treat (Flynn, Curry & Kemba Walker)

Best Division: National (unanimous)
