Subject: Laughlin River Run 2006

April 28, 2006. Laughlin River Run. Believe it or not in the 21 years I’ve been riding on the street, this is the FIRST time I’ve ever made the Laughlin River Run. I apologize in advance for the quality of some of these pics. I had broken my previous digital camera by putting it in my tool bag on a ride and when I got to my destination, it didn’t work. I decided that I would never ever take a nice camera on a ride with me again as I didn’t want to chance breaking another one (although I ended up breaking this one too). This camera happened to be free… I won it in a Christmas party Raffle. It has no type of steady shot feature, it takes lousy pictures in low light situations and the flash may as well not even be on it.. It’s really just a cheap POS but its 4mp still camera and has a camcorder (and MP3 player). So I figured if I snapped enough pictures that some of them would come out ok. I lightened up some of the pictures but I will still have to go back and Photoshop some of them to sharpen the blurry ones. Anyway, I decided to post them here on the SD Riders message board that I started creating a long time ago and ran out of time to finish. Maybe we can start using it to organize future rides and for picture sharing etc., who knows. So anyway…here it is. Enjoy!!!

Ok Friday was a little slow around here so I did some video editing. This is pretty much the first time I’ve ever edited video so its not the greatest production in the world but at least I was able to join all of the short clips into a few longer ones. Check em’ out.

This is Jerry leading the group down the grade into Palm Desert.

We finally made it ! Kicking back in the rental house driveway, reflecting on the ride out.

It’s a toss up between this bike… and they spikey one from earlier as far as my favorite bike there. This one looks a little more practical and something that might be able to be ridden though, so this one has my vote for favorite of the rideable bikes.

Riding back to needles Saturday

The back road to Needles

After Me, Jerry, Greg all went back to the house to kick back and cool off, we decided to go get some dinner at a mexi-food joint. The food was pretty good. Then we decided to ride back in to Laughlin to see what was crackin’ with the rest of the group.

Ok so my cheap camera sucks. I had to do a little photoshopping to make this picture viewable. I happen to suck at photoshop so the color may look a little strange or it may look a little grainy but I’ll be damned if I didn’t go thru all that trouble to take all these one handed pics while doing 65+mph and have them not come out.

Had to lighten this one up a little too but I like this picture

Dark videos of us riding home back to needles on the back road. I tried to lighten them up using Microsoft Video Editor and it has a brightness adjustment but no contrast adjustment so I wasn’t able to do much. I’ll keep working on these. I’d really like to see them come out. Anybody else out there that’s good at video editing???

If anybody has ever seen the classic movie “The Road Warrior” the cheap quality of my camcorder kind of rivals the cheap Australian cinematography of that movie.

Some video of the videographer. It gets a little hairy throttling and steering with one hand and managing the camera with the other… Especially when crankin’ it up there towards 100mph and suddenly catching a gust of wind. I’ll do just about anything to get a cool picture though.

What a trip! Enjoyed pics- tho' I shudder to think how you shot most. Haven't been to Laughlin in many moons- Is Ramada Inn still there? (it has a train that runs thru the hotel)- I could make out Kokopelly in one of nite shots- did you stop there? (Oatman looks like a wild west town!) Although you were actually DEAF on Monday (d/t swelling from beesting)- am glad that's the only affliction you suffered. (Was afraid your grp would be mistaken for "Angels" grp).

It was a fun trip. 340 miles each way. Ramada is still there. Did not stop at Kokopelly, what is that, a casino? Oatman IS an 1800's wild west ghost town. It was cool to see the burro's cruising around. They have free run of the place and are supposedly descended from the ones used to settle Oatman during the mining days. There are a LOT more bike groups out there that more closely resemble "Angles" I did not see any of their presence there. I DID however see a few of them chatting with the La Mesa PD a couple of weeks ago during the weekly car cruise. The trip was pretty uneventful with exception of one of our group running out of gas in the fast lane outside of Blythe. Since I was riding drag (at the back of the pack), I had to put myself between the cars and her to divert traffic around until we could get her bike fired again. The shoulder was only 2 feet wide and the cars were whizzing by at about 90mph not more than 5 feet away. We got her bike fired and then I had to break traffic again so she could pull back out onto the highway. That was a little unnerving. It's one thing doing it in a car but totally different when there is nothing between you and these huge masses of metal flying by.
