Subject: Long Musings on the return of WCBSFM from someone you don't know

Or at least probably don’t know.

I was a long time fan of WCBS-FM, horrified when the flip to Jack took place (posting about it on the other board at the time), silently walking by the protest in front of the studios, living on Sirius and my Ipod for the last two years, and overjoyed at the sudden return of our station. I was at an urgent quarterly meeting during the flip back but still had headphones on to hear it live.

I haven't posted about this anywhere to date, so with apologies this is probably more for me than you, but I have come to a conclusion – this is not our WCBS-FM.

I wanted to like it – I really did, but it became an effort having to look past many things. I'm not a 50's fanatic, but there is nothing wrong with acknowledging the roots of rock & roll. I had no problem with modernizing the playlist, but three Prince songs in the first day or so was just not appropriate. On the air for a week and still not having all the air shifts filled – with someone – at least temporarily, that was a big mistake. There were and are too many good people that could have added the personality to the station when it should have been differentiating itself from Jack or my Ipod. The
'white breading" of the airstaff is also very annoying. Even though I am a middle aged white guy I don’t have a compelling need for every jock to be a middle aged white guy – that was just shameful. Then there was the word that these guys were just robots. People like Bob and the others had absolutely no control of the playlist on their shift. I started getting the feeling that something was very wrong here.

I must admit that the final straw was when I tuned in for the "special surprise radio great" a few weeks back only to find out it was a dead guy. With all respect for Wolfman Jack’s legacy, only a management that could bring you Jack FM would think that putting a dead guy on the air as a special guest is an okay thing to do.

This is not our WCBS-FM. This is bland robot radio. It is giving a few guys we like a paycheck – which is good, but I find myself going back to Sirius or my Ipod more and more often. To the CBS management: I don’t know if I'm more upset that you took my favorite station away two years ago or that you attempted to substitute this tin-plated replica in it’s place now. Where is the apology? Where is the sincerity?

Thanks for letting me vent…..
