Subject: Objective opinion of the NYRMB

Let’s be fair and evaluate the NYRMB objectively. The board has earned the respect of radio professionals and enthusiasts like me who have no stake in the business. Dr. Sniffen has sustained the board which has received millions of hits for almost 10 years. It has helped people to reconnect and exchange ideas about trends and decisions good and bad in the radio business. Many, but not all of his comments are valid.

The board made the management of WABC aware that there is an appreciation of the heritage of the station. Without the NYRMB there would be no WABC Rewound or Saturday night oldies. Other than that his board and other radio boards have not impacted on radio decisions. I am sure many of the suits in the radio business read the boards, but comments made do not affect their decision making. I was appreciative that Alan created a special board after the format change at WCBS-FM to allow us to vent. Certainly the many comments expressing dissatisfaction with the JACK format representation a cross-section of active listeners. Perhaps reading the NYRMB by radio executives contributed to their decision to bring back the old WCBS-FM with modifications.

Alan Sniffen has been extremely inconsistent in deleting posts which in his opinion are not appropriate for his board. He should at least have a written set of posting guidelines. At times he has unfairly taken away passwords of people who he feels post inappropriately. He should at least send an e-mail explaining why a post was deleted. It is obvious that he is on an ego trip thinking that his board is G-d’s gift to New York Radio. There were times he was very nasty to people. He should be the mayor not the dictator of a virtual community. Radio-info and Radioinsight are moderated by a team of volunteers instead of one person. Does Alan Sniffen have a life away from the NYRMB? He once said that he was moderating his board while he was on vacation. Alan, get a life!

I will make one more comment. Alan has used the same software for the last 10 years. There are certainly more up to date programs that are used for message boards. I am certain that many posters to the NYRMB would help defray the costs that Alan incurs in running his board.
