I listened to CBS FM from day one 35 years ago. I mentioned in a previous post that part of the station's success was due to the fact that 70's music was horrible. The other reason was WOR FM. In the late 60's, half of their playlist was oldies. Lots of doo wop. They were selling the OR FM double golden albums in the stores. It instilled in alot of us a love for the oldies. In the early 70's OR FM phased out oldies - soon to become 99X. Then on July 7th, 1972 CBS FM went all oldies and people flocked to the station. And it was with unknown djs, except Bill Brown who came from OR FM. You could say he's the original oldies dj in NY. Many of us were buying fm converters for our cars so we wouldn't have to listen to Harry, Brucie, Ron and Dan playing disco, Village People and Peter Frampton. CBS FM was playing oldies for almost a decade when Harry came on board. He only came because he was dumped by WABC. He in turn bumped longtime morning man at CBS Jack Miller (JM in the AM). Brucie drifted to WNBC (where Wolfman Jack bumped him into midday) and then to WYNY before joining 101. Dick Heatherton handled pm drive for a decade before Bob Shannon came along. Lundy and Ingram came along after they couldn't find work. My point is that it was the music, not the djs that brought us to this station. I liked the djs, but there was a revolving door and they came and went. Most of us didn't like NEW FM. On construction sites it was a war of those two stations. I found it ironic to see Pat St. John, a longhair who played music I hated, come to CBS when he couldn't find a job and play oldies at 2am on a Sunday morning! I know these guys increased the ratings, but for alot of us it was the music. At the turn of the new century, CBS's playlist was full of the dreaded 70's music, ironically the same music that drove us to the station in the first place. And even some 80's! Living in the northern suburbs, I was listening more to Kool96.7, 97.7 Puoghkeepsie(where Max did am drive when he left CBS), B105 in Danbury and at night, the great KB in Buffalo. CBS FM became the 5th preset on my radio. Then they dumped the Doo Wop Shop, dropped specialty shows and brought in the dreadful Mickey Dolenz. When Harry left in 2003, he said he wasn't retiring - he just didn't like the diredtion the station was taking. Even with Bob Shannon, Brucie etc, the station was horrible. If the reincarnation of the Golden 101 is anythig like those last days, it is doomed. Supposedly no pre '64 music, lots of 70's and 80's - no thanks. Even the best dj's could not make me listen to that stuff. I have my cds and Sirius.
