Just a couple of counter-things, Terry .... A few come to mind instantly:

a) How did the songs wind up getting a second life in movies in the first place? This would be another branch of media/entertainment recognizing a form of the nostalgia factor, no?

b) Songwriting has been more studio-fueled in more modern times, and essentially has lost the essence that appealed at one time to both genders of the same age (and young ones at that). Using Oldies and Classic Rock as backdrop may be the most recent supply line left for many producers who are looking to sell products to both genders. Why do only half the job?

c) Somewhat associated to (b) .... With the excess of strobe-like spots bashing twenty images at us in thirty seconds in hopes that one do the trick, a simpler spot would tend to stand out more in some instances. But much of the music and tempos today strike me as being too immediate to serve well in some of the cheerier or mass appeal products. By default, then, older song hooks surface.

d) ' .....In some cases, they're just a pleasant sound that fits the mood they're trying to establish without necessarily counting on people having a memory of the song.'
And, if I may say, in some cases, without counting on coming up with something original themselves. Often, it's easier and cheaper to go with past formulas, rather than pay Barry Manilow or Jake Holmes to provide the sound.
