Subject: Best Way to Program an Oldies Station

Programming an oldies station is an art not a science. You can not please all the listeners all of the time. There are three categories:

1. Burnouts - I've heard that a million times over the years. Examples are Repect by Aretha Franklin, Mony Mony by Tommy James and the Shondells, and You've Lost that Loving Feeling by the Righteous Brothers.

2. Oh Wow - I haven't heard that in the longest time

3 Rareties - I have never heard that one.

There must be a good balance among these caegories. A programmer must appeal to casual listeners and to music mavens. During the last two years WCBS-FM played too many burnouts. Bob Shannon's WLNG show is excellent because he plays a lot in the #2 category.

Any comments?
