Subject: Eight Month Ago Today

As I write this, it is about 4:30 EST. It was eight months ago at this time that I was listening to 101.1 and I noticed it sounded different. No Bob Shannon, no commercials and some songs from the 50s thrown in. This was unusual considering at that time, the station played hits from before 1964 only on Sunday nights.

It wasn't long before The Summer Wind by Frank Sinatra would be heard. This would be followed by a short pause and then the whole series of songs and movie clips with the work "Jack" edited out.

By 4:45, I called a friend in the business and I said I think CBS FM is going Jack. I was more on target than I would have liked to be.

You know the rest. At 4:57, the bomb dropped.

Little did we know that after Bill Brown left the air that afternoon, the jocks we had listened to for so long were being let go for an automated format that would have liners between songs that would insult the dedicated oldies listeners.

It's eight months later and people still talk about what happened that day.

Let's hope for good radio to return to New York and soon.
