The news about Buffalo's "KB" is very sad. Since June 3,they partially filled the gap following WCBS-FM's hijacking. In northern New Jersey, their signal was "crystal clear" and after sundown, for many in the NY/northern NJ area, they were the only audible oldies station. As a kid, I listened to KB - Jackson Armstrong was to Buffalo what Cousin Brucie was to New York radio. Because KB had such a great signal covering over 30 states, their significance went far beyond western New York; with oldies formats disappearing they filled a necessary format gap. I believe Buffalo has another oldies station on the FM dial, but again KB served many well beyond the borders of its market. It is too bad Arbitron ratings do not properly measure remote listening. I would conjecture that if research were to be done on nighttime listening in collective markets in the eastern third of the US, KB would have figured prominently. While this is a loss for oldies listeners particularly in the New York City area where we don't have many choices it is especially sad to lose a legendary station in the same abrupt and incredibly rude manner as WCBS-FM. If anyone knows any other clear channel AM stations still playing oldies, let us know.
For those of us who are still sad over the loss of WCBS-FM, and now KB, if it makes you feel any better, keep in mind there are others who share your feelings--we are all in this together. Hopefully this news will help motivate us to further action. They can take away our music but they can't take away our "ruach."
