Last night was the annual charge conference for Clarendon. Many of you probably haven't been involved in these, so I just wanted to tell you a bit about it.
Charge conferences are held each year to vote on the leadership and officers of the church, as well as other policies. They are led by the District Superintendent; for us, the DS is Rev. Dr. Young Jin Cho, who just became the DS in July this year. He spoke for a few minutes at the beginning of the meeting, and it was wonderful to hear his vision for the church and his passion for serving. If you ever have a chance to hear him speak, take advantage of it.
The charge conference is open to everyone in the church, although the people who come are mostly those who are on various committees. Jen London, who is the chair of lay leadership at the church, reported on the church's accomplishments this year (including the Honduras mission, the success of the youth program, as well as Compass), and our goals and vision for the coming year (including the plans for the 100th Anniversary celebrations).
During the meeting, everyone in attendance had the opportunity to vote on nominations and motions made by the various committees, including pastor salaries and reimbursements; lay leadership and officers (which includes the members of all the church committees, such as Staff-Parish Relations, Finance, Trustees, Worship, etc); as well as other positions like leadership of Compass (me) and youth ministries (Dan). Last night we also had a vote for a ministerial candidate (Katie Posey) who, of course, passed; and we voted for the four lay speakers for the church.
The other part of the charge conference is the pastor's report, so last night Glen gave his report evaluating his successes at the church in the past year and throughout his time at Clarendon.
That's pretty much it! If you have any questions about how this stuff works, please let me know. Dan, Silvia, and I are all on church council (and I will be vice-chair of the council this coming year), so feel free to chat with any of us if you've got questions, comments, or concerns. Sometimes church leadership seems to be a closed process, but it shouldn't be: virtually all of the committee meetings of the church are open to the whole congregation, and anyone who is interested can get involved in the process.
