FOR WHICH WE ARE TRULY THANKFUL

CHAPTER FOUR – RECOVERY

by Sylvia Bartlett Mohr

It occurs to me that it might behoove me to explain here that the name of this chapter, Recovery, has nothing to do with Recovery medically. It has to do with the completion of a phase of aircraft operations on a carrier when the ship's planes, the ones that can, have all returned to the deck, been secured and the operational phase of the airport which the ship becomes during flight operations have been secured. Planes are down, secured in place and either being worked on or taken apart as the results of the flight ops dictate.

An aircraft carrier never truly sleeps. Even a long ghosted aircraft carrier, such as my beloved Hornet has an atmosphere of standing down, not turning off that is unique, at least in my experience to this city at sea. For the ghosts on the Hornet never sleep, nor avoid coming out to play. Just as on an active carrier, there are always personnel who are ON DUTY, even 'safely' in home port; so, a retired aircraft carrier has a part of its heart and soul that is always at ready. That was what made it such a thrill for this history buff to serve aboard her, to serve aboard a historical craft of any kind must be truly a unique opportunity, but none more so than the Hornet.

Mind, as a former nurse, it is a condition I understand. Hospitals can never really rest or sleep either. There are certain areas of life that are always manned, ever on duty and alert. So to all who serve or have served in that 'first responder' kind of field…Marine or not, my heart extends a truly felt and understood 'Semper Fidelis'. Always, always faithful, my friends. Semper Fi.

Sylvia 2-26-2006 Note: This posting will be in four sections. The breaks just seemed logical. Hope you all don't mind…well, as far as responding…all ONE of you so far. Try not to break up the Chapter by commenting before all 4 are up…Okay? Here goes!
