Too Busy For The Military?

Barack Obama is a busy man. The media marvels at his energy and work ethic. Just average presidents may appear on one Sunday talk show. Barack Obama appeared on five in one day! Most presidents have delivered a major-ground breaking speech once every six months or so. But Barack Obama can do a major speech before breakfast and knock out another before lunch.

In addition, our president is a “Renaissance Man.” He knows so much about so many things. He can run General Motors and set Wall Street salaries. He can instruct us on the proper way to sneeze during flu season (into the bend of your elbow), while lowering world wide temperatures. This week he made it clear that your kids’ school day and year should be longer. He can decide how many Jews can live in Jerusalem, and whether you can keep your health insurance or be forced to buy his government policy.

But with all of his frenetic activity, our president has had little time to speak with General Stanley A. McChrystal, the man in charge of U.S. forces in Afghanistan. The general shocked official Washington last weekend when he truthfully answered a reporter’s question and admitted that since his appointment he has spoken to Obama a grand total of one time.

The general says our soldiers on the front lines need reinforcements. He is requesting more weapons, supplies, and 40,000 men. But the man whose slogan was “Yes We Can!” can’t say “yes” to General McChrystal without igniting outrage among large portions of the political Left. So he is saying “Not just yet,” stalling while our military tries to deal with a strengthening enemy.

From Afghanistan to Iran, North Korea to Venezuela, Russia to China, America’s enemies are concluding there is nothing to fear from America. From Poland to France, Great Britain to Israel, our friends are concluding there is no resolve in America. I am no prophet but on this I can predict with certainty: The headlines in the months ahead from around the world will make it clear that America is in retreat and that tyrants are on the move.

“The Fundamental Difference”

As Congress continues to debate government-run healthcare, there is yet another poll that should give liberal politicians reason to reconsider. A Gallup poll released today finds that 61% of respondents believe that “Americans themselves should be primarily responsible for making sure they and their families have health insurance.” Just 37% said government should be responsible for providing everyone with health insurance.

The American people do not want Big Government dictating their daily lives and taking more and more of their hard-earned money. But liberals just don’t get it, and that’s not hyperbole on my part. Consider this exchange in the Senate Finance Committee last week:

Chairman Max Baucus (D-MT): "All the amendments today are not [a] health reform plan… I don’t know what the Republican alternative is. ... I don’t see a massive or a big, large proposal on the other side for an alternative. I don’t see one."

Sen. Jon Kyl (R-AZ): “We don’t believe in a massive government takeover. That’s the fundamental difference between what the [Democrats’ proposal] does and what Republicans are for. [ObamaCare] says we can’t do what we want to achieve unless we basically scrap what we have and substitute a new government takeover of how insurance is going to be offered in this country…”

The size and scope of government and its proper role is indeed the fundamental difference between liberals and conservatives, and I’m glad to see that issue finally getting some attention in this debate.

Down, But Not Dead

Yesterday, the Senate Finance Committee voted down two amendments trying to add a so-called “public option” to the healthcare bill. In both votes, Republicans unanimously opposed the public option, while five Democrats defected on the first vote and three Democrats defected on the second vote. Those votes proved yet again that the most bi-partisan aspect of this legislation has been the opposition to it.

Despite some headlines, I think it’s premature to write the public option’s obituary. It is in every other version of the bill, and the House reportedly cannot pass a healthcare “reform” bill without the public option, due to the leftwing Progressive Caucus’ stranglehold over the House majority. But the public option is one of the worst aspects of this bill because it will lead to a single payer, socialized healthcare system. Obama knows that and that’s why the liberals want it so badly.

Speaking of what else the liberals want, do you want your tax dollars going to pay for abortions? Most liberals do. Today, the Finance Committee voted down an amendment by Senator Orrin Hatch (R-UT) to expressly prohibit taxpayer-funding of abortion in the healthcare bill. The committee also defeated an amendment to protect the rights of doctors and nurses who refuse to perform abortions. Senator Charles Grassley (R-IA) offered an amendment requiring proof of identity for individuals enrolling in the new healthcare plan, but the liberal majority defeated that too.
