Subject: Guppies and Disease

I thought fish were supposed to be the easy pet to have! HA! White spot, parasites - I can't seem to get it right. Different opinions from different pet shops. H E L P.
I have (or at least I thought) just managed to perfect the condition of the water in my tank (70 litres - don't what that is in US - gallons!, after having huge losses of fish (mainly guppies) previously - approx 6-7 weeks ago - lost over 40 babies in one night! Another time lost 8 young fish overnight. Tonight, I have noticed a couple of small white dots/very small patches on my pregnant guppy - she is one of the few remaining originals I have, she had the 40+ family and is getting larger by the day. I have does the tank with ICK treatment (high dosage given, I know I was supposed to keep filter running but someone mentioned to me that if it is kept running, the carbon in the filter makes the treatment less effective. Therefore, I left the whole thing turned off for about 1-2 hours - the fish are still OK and yes, I have tetras in with them and all seemed to cope OK.) I am getting sick of different advice resulting in a small fortune in treatment fees.
Anyone know what I can do (the treatment I used does have malachite green as an ingredient).

Thanks and regards,
Judy (NSW Sth Coast/Australia)
