Subject: my Betafish are dying

I've had 6 male Betafish for over a year. In the past 3 weeks 5 of them have died. They each seemed to be as healthy as could be - eating, unfurling their fins, poking around, etc - and then I would suddenly find them sunk, lying on thebottom of their container and as dead as can be. Since they haven't all died at the same time I don't think it's the plants, or snails, or food that I'm using and besides - these things aren't new. I'd appreciate any help before my last fish dies. I am fond of them and it bothers me to think that perhaps I am doing this to them inadvertently.
