From your discription the Betta you have is a male. Male Bettas, of the two sexes are the only ones with bright colours and long fins. The females have short fins and are dull in colour(though there sre now coloured females-but they are still dull compared to the males). If you are intending to get a companion for your fish it is adviced that you do not get another male betta. It would be best for you to get another peaceful species of fish(because males will and have attacked females as well).
