Subject: Favourite John Hughes movies?

How about an In Memoriam thread for the late great John Hughes?

So many wonderful wonderful films to choose from:

The Breakfast Club
Pretty in Pink
Sixteen Candles
Ferris Bueller's Day Off
Planes, Trains and Automobiles
Uncle Buck
Home Alone

But I think my favourite is Some Kind of Wonderful. It's not as well known as it deserves to be. Basically Hughes re-made Pretty in Pink with the gender of the main protagonists reversed because after screenings the studio made him change the ending of Pretty in Pink so Molly Ringwald ended up with the popular boy. Some Kind of Wonderful ends the right way. I defy anyone, male or female, straight or gay, not to fall in love with Mary Stuart Masterson's character Watts in that film. I cry at the end every time.

RIP John Hughes

they are my two favourites, could watch them over and over again. I'm not familiar with Some Kind of Wonderful, I'd like to see it I think and thanks for the warning, I'll get my Kleenex handy! As for the others I like them all, saw Ferris Bueller's Day Off again the other night, great film. Home Alone and Uncle Buck I can take or leave, Planes, Trains and Automobiles I love.

But I don't think I've seen a single one. Or if I have, then they certainly weren't memorable. *shrug*

Honestly do yourself a favour and rent The Breakfast Club, Some Kind of Wonderful and Ferris Bueller's Day Off. They're undeniably a little bit cheesy, but they are also generation defining and genre defining 1980s high school angst movies, I'm sure an influence on Buffy the Vampire Slayer, minus the vampires. Don't just take my word for it, I'd lay money on Gretch, Andy and Tee backing me up, less sure about RJA and Kashy as they're youngsters like you and might not have seen them either.

Didn't read the thread correctly, I saw Ferris Bueller and Home Alone. Didn't particularly like them but I'll see if I can scrounge up The Breakfast Club somewhere online.

but now you mention it, I see it

I still have Ferris Bueller on the dvr, if only I could beam gabs into my living room!!

I want to watch them all again now and transport myself back to the glorious 80's!!

But not the ones he really is known for, such as Pretty in Pink etc, since I was too young for those and they didn't have the best reputation when I was growing up, although I have a friend who swears by them

I love it but I still maintain that Some Kind of Wonderful, his second take on the same story, is better. The trouble with Pretty in Pink is that Blaine is basically a dick and Duckie is clearly gay but doesn't realise it, so Andie's kinda fucked whatever.

In SKoW all three main characters are actually sympathetic and have loads of chemistry, and in the end the guy ends up with the right girl.
