in fact I think they will dispense with our department altogether and merge with another which is why I'm worried, there are four members of staff there at our level and above who would have to absorb our workload into their own, this is how things are going here now, if someone either retires, leaves or a department can be merged with another then there is always a staff loss and it's apparently our turn next. It won't be for a few months I don't think, probably the middle of the year so plenty of time to think about what to do next.

Or are you just preparing for the worst?

if they re-organise departments as they have indicated I probably will lose my job, as to whether there will be anything else within the uni I doubt it in the present climate, I'm not entirely giving up hope, althoug our Dean is not one of my favourite people she is up in arms about it and on the warpath, unfortunatly I don't think it will do any good, its all down the cost cutting.

That must be very worrying for you, especially in the current economic climate. Have you already started looking for another job?

but not panicking, compared to some of my colleagues I'm in a fairly strong financial position so I'm not going to rush into anything just yet, also I have a small property I own which I could sell but I don't really want to the property market being what it is at the moment, it brings in an extra income in rental payments which is handy. As I said I don't have to worry about it immediately, all this isn't going to occur overnight and it will probably be in a few months time, it's just very unsettling.
