The great thing about The Wire is that it just keeps getting better and better -- because it is one continuous story broken up into five chapters, with each chapter adding another layer of the cake, it just builds and builds and builds.

not easy to understand much of the time but I got the gist of what they were talking about, also I think the only name I can recall this morning is McNulty (mmmm, McNulty)but I'm sure I'll catch all the others eventually.

why did you have to mention cake? now I have to have some!!

Wikipedia has tons of stuff on The Wire. Obviously you'd need to watch out for spoilers, but if you go to the main page

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Wire

and scroll down to the bottom you'll see a table with links to individual characters and also character groups ("kingpins", "dealers" etc.).

BTW, I just noticed on that page that Barack Obama said The Wire is his favourite show. Go Obama!

McNulty is one of the central characters, and he is sort of one of the heroes, but he is also a complete fuck-up.

obviously a man of good taste!

Thanks for the wiki link, is the whole series in black and white? not that I mind, I like it actually, seems to make it more gritty and realistic somehow.

so McNulty is a fuck-up is he? I kinda gathered that from last night, he seemed determined to get himself into more trouble

he's still eminently shaggable though ;-)

Was the episode you watched last night B+W? Because it definitely shouldn't have been! Are you watching it on DVD or were they downloaded files?

If you just take a cursory look at the Wikipedia page you'll see that all the screencaps from the show are in colour.

BTW, I saw the first two episodes of "Generation Kill" last night, David Simon and Ed Burns' latest HBO miniseries about the Iraq War. It's similar in some ways to The Wire, huge ensemble cast, very realistic dialogue, no non-diegetic music, very flawed characters you take to and like none the less, and a rather bleak take on the subject matter. I absolutely loved it.

(Hoping to tempt others into watching it too ...)

As you can see, it is in colour!

strange, I'll have a word with my son and see if he can shed any light on that, maybe subsequent eps are in colour or it could be my dvd player/tv input maybe?

that's a great opening scene although I really had to concentrate and listen carefully to what they were saying

the new show you mentioned sounds good but I think I can only cope with one gritty realistic show at a time!!

... then all the episodes should be in colour. If the one you watched wasn't I'd have thought it's more likely to be a problem with your DVD player or your TV. It could be that your TV isn't properly tuned into your DVD player, or that the settings on the DVD player are incorrect (both could have been reset by a power outage or something).

so its my tv or dvd player, I'll have a mess around tonight and reset everything, we did have a power cut last Friday for a few hours so maybe that's the problem
