It was probably more like 5 seconds, but you know how we men like to exaggerate!

I must say, I'm very very content here for the time being. But lots of the people I know here who've been here for quite a while assure me that the love affair with Paris wears off after about two years.

For what reason do people go off Paris? It sounds like the perfect place to live.

As for men exaggerating, the less said about that the better! ;-)

Like anywhere else it has its faults, and I'm not blind to them. At the moment the good massively outweighs the bad: it is certainly one of the most beautiful cities in the world, breathtakingly so; it is a World class city, like London and New York, and has all the vibrancy and excitement that you'd associate with that (stuff *happens* here); culturally it's incredible, amazing art and music everywhere; food and drink is great and caters to all budgets (you can eat out here much cheaper than you can in London).

On the minus side, it's actually a very conservative city: people are expected to dress and behave a certain way (especially women -- I've heard dozens of stories from women of complete strangers just walking up to them and criticising the way they are dressed). Yes, stuff like Sexy Sushi happens here, but it is very much a sub-culture and you have to seek it out. On the whole everyone is practically in uniform (again, especially the women). Also it is on the whole a very rude, conceited and arrogant city. I've met lots of nice people here, but they are greatly outnumbered by the number of rude arseholes here. Lastly, if you live here a long time you eventually get caught up in the hell that is French beaurocracy which can just suck the life out of you completely.

I guess if you live here long enough you become blase to the good things and the bad thing just wear you down. It hasn't happened to me yet, and I can't imagine it will for quite a while.

I'm aquainted with folks at work and some family who have experience of living in Paris and other areas of France and they more or less have the same view as you regarding the rudeness and arrogance of the french, it really upset one girl I know who couldn't cope with it and ended up coming back here having given up what initially seemed to be an idyllic life there, she now lives happily in Amsterdam and loves it and the people very much.

In fact I know that most French people hate Parisians too.

But women have a much tougher time of it here than men do. On one hand that makes it easier for me, but on the other hand it really bothers me seeing women treated disrespectfully. If you wear the uniform (boots, jeans, a smart casual sweater, and a very chic jacket, long hair tied up, perfect minimal makeup, discrete but very classy jewellery) and act all demure and sweet then you're fine. Show the slightest bit of flesh and they assume you're a whore. Wear anything alternative/indie/punky and they assume you're a lesbian or some sort of sociopath trying to make a statement. And they really aren't shy of telling that to you, even if they don't know you from Eve.

I know a lot of British, American and Canadian girls who came here and fell in love with the place (or fell in love with a French man), ended up staying, and are now utterly miserable here (if they stayed because of the French man they are 9 times out of 10 also miserable because they discovered that the wonderful romantic man with the oh-so-sexy accent had been having sex with other women in their bed the entire time).

Of course it is still an awesome place to come and visit. If you're here for just a weekend or a short time you're unlikely to come across this sort of thing, and then you get to enjoy all the things that make the city amazing. And it really is amazing.

This will sound *really* naive, but after being here for about a week I started thinking, "It's really sweet how French men take their daughters out for dinner all the time."

*penny drops*

"Wait a minute! That's NOT his daughter!"

LOL

But seriously, there is a huge mistress culture here, especially visible in the swanky bit of town I live in.

naive maybe but for some reason I find that very sweet!

and I wouldn't last two minutes would I? I'd be flashing the boobs left right and centre deliberatly just to annoy everyone, I mean, I like the sound of the "uniform" outfit occasionally but it must seem like you have a load of stepford type women walking around, I much prefer to see a mixture of styles on both men and women.
