Subject: Hi everyone
I'm in Edinburgh. My flat is sold, the new owners move in next Monday. I'm here sorting out everything, organising movers and packers, making sure the bills are paid, etc. The landline has already been cut off so I have no broadband at my flat, and for some bizarre reason I can't get a signal on my iPhone in my flat either, so I'm completely cut off! I'll be popping into a very nice cafe with free Wi-Fi near my flat every afternoon for an hour or so, but I guess I probably won't be posting much.
The flat sale is a good thing long run, I managed to sell before the prices were effected up here, and it means I'll be in a position to buy down south hopefully when the market is in a complete slump. Nevertheless, I'm sad about it too. Packing up all your belongings is so depressing, and 95% of my stuff will be in storage for months before I plan to start looking to buy. In the meantime I'm going to feel very homeless. Going from owning your own place which you have all to yourself to renting a small room in a friend's flat is quite an odd experience. It won't be for that long in the grand scheme of things but it is still quite odd.

I've been renting a room for the past 6 years, it's a bit odd having all your life in one little room but you get used to it - can't wait to get my own place! lol.
Good luck finding a house in a few months, hope all goes well :o)

That's good news!! -- andypandy, 19:03:09 07/15/08 Tue [1] (82.30.76.72)
I popped into Facebook today and saw you were in Edinburgh, thought you might have good news about your flat, I suppose it must feel strange, you've been there quite a while haven't you? Anyway hopefully you won't have to wait too long before you can afford to move into your own place again. I always think that packing up and moving on is quite a sad experience whether its the best thing for you or not, you're bound to feel a little lost I think but I'm sure your friend is happy to put up with you a little longer!!
Happy flat hunting!! Let us know how you get on with it once you start looking won't you?

You didn't? Heh. -- DZR, 17:44:05 07/16/08 Wed [1] (86.131.236.95)
I haven't been living in Edinburgh since last October. I took a permanent position with Texperts, who were formally a client of mine, and moved to Cambridge where I've been renting a room in my friend Thomas's flat -- Thomas is also a co-founder of Texperts. My flat didn't go on the market until this spring because that is by far the best time to sell in Edinburgh. Until now I've enjoyed still having a proper home, and have spent quite a few weekends up in Edinburgh. After this weekend I won't be able to do that anymore. I have nothing against moving (although it is a bit stressful) and agree that in some sense it is exciting. Bt the property market is very weird here at the moment -- it was a good time to sell but probably isn't a god time to buy yet, and the result of that is that I won't have my own place for quite a few months. That's what I'm finding depressing: having no home of my own except a small room in someone else's flat, and all my possessions in storage.

i've been there...and it's super...unsettling. 'specially without your own space and privacy.
i remember the textpert bit...but for some reason thought you were doing a 3 days here 4 days there sorta thing. i've been out of it.
congrats on the sale though. people can't sell a house here to save their lives. horrible horrible market.

Yeah, I sold just in time -- DZR, 18:50:55 07/16/08 Wed [1] (86.131.236.95)
The market here is horrible too and likely to continue to get worse for the next 18 months.
It's exactly the space and the privacy I miss. Thomas and I get on really well and he's a great house mate. But I'm used to my own space and my own place. It's a very weird experience to be a lodger again, and will only get worse now I won't be able to escape up to Edinburgh and my own place.
I'd appreciate your thoughts on my next post, "Pop quiz".
