I am Italian, from Canarsie, and my fiance is black. He's from East New York. We met in college, and both agree that our hometowns are depressing at best, but for different reasons. It's so sad; my parents still talk about "the good old days" in Canarsie: when there were race riots at Canarsie High School, when my addict uncle and his junkie friends threw their friend that overdosed into the bushed in Seaview Park, and other acts of random bullshit that weren't seen as bad, because the perps were arrogant Italian morons, my favorite type of white trash. Canarsie was more ghetto in the '60's and '70's than it will ever be today: it was just all white people then, so it was "acceptable." Give me a fucking break.
