What is wrong with all of you...I lived in Canarsie until 1994 when there was 300 homes for sale and so called "white flight" took over the neighborhood. My son started high school and I felt threatened in my own area. Canarsie was a great place to grow up. It was a little bit of heaven in the middle of Bkln hell. Everyone knew each other...black or white. No, there were not too many black families that lived there at the time. In 1973, the schools started busing in from other areas. I was in the ninth grade...The great part of the neighborhood was not the riots you fools! The riots started because of the segregation. I remember playing handball at Canarsie HS and a group of blacks and hispanics came running thru with knives stabbing people for no apparent reason. This was not fun...but hanging out on Ave "L" at night with all your friends was. I mean hundreds of us and we all knew each other. How about the little park on E 95th St...All the store owners knew us and eventually knew our kids. Our kids started school together and became friends. Canarsie Pier was a great place to fish...Canarsie movie theater was a great place to spend a few hours...Seaview Park was great for Sports and bike riding and snake hunting....Yes, it was a great neighborhood and everyone knew each other...those of you who only listen to the bad stories just don't remember...Yes, I left because the area changed...I went to Canarsie HS for 9th grade orientation for my son and they were installing metal detectors...it was time to go....We moved to Florida and everyone I ever knew in my life has spread all over the U.S....my son lost touch with many people that touched his life for 15 years....WHAT DID HAPPEN TO GOOD OLD CANARSIE???? I go there now to visit some friends and family...I am appalled at checking my bag at the front of a store and being stared at because I am white...I am not prejudiced but apparently all of you are including the black persons respondiing to this thread...again I ask, WHAT DID HAPPEN TO GOOD OLD CANARSIE????
