Okay, so I was not exactly a beginner. I had played a couple of games by snail mail back when The Coconut Council was the US moderator. That was so long ago, however, that this might just as well have been my first game. And boy, did I make my share of beginner's mistakes.
First off, I neglected to start out with a warp-capable transport for my cargo ships. This nearly crippled my ship production from the get-go, and denied me the opportunity to take advantage of several temporary Special Abilities later in the game, due to lack of credits.
I also did not build a Comm Box right away, which deprived me of a few planets I would have taken much sooner. The lack of credits compounded this problem, as for many turns I was unable to afford a Comm Box in addition to the other ships I wanted to build.
I was fortunate in two items in particular. First, I put out a message looking for allies on Turn 1. I got only one response, but it was from Astral Cowboys. He took me under his wing and gave me advice and in-game help. I don't believe I would have made it into the top 10, or perhaps even survived, if it were not for his assistance. Thanks a lot, Don, and congratulations on the win.
Second, I am glad I took Lexmons as my race. The higher Tech scores helped me earn SAs I probably would not have gotten if I had had to rely on just my score. One of those was 'Credits increased by total Points,' which I earned on Turn 7, and which helped relieve my cash flow problem.
All in all, I enjoyed the game despite my mistakes. I can't wait for Game 32 to begin!
