Fred is absolutely correct with his advice. As for civilian conditioning, nothing will get you in better shape to chop wood, dig a sink, and haul water than chopping wood, digging sinks, and hauling water. This way your muscles will become conditioned to the repetitive motion. Its what the Army calls Battle Focused Physical Training.
