The vistors center at Grand Ecore gives a good overview of the area and is a good starting point for exploration. Below that bluff is where the entire Mississippi River Squadron dropped anchor and Banks's Army encamped on the bluff. The town of Grand Ecore was burned when the yanks pulled out. The replica of the French fort along the Cane River gives insight into the French influence and the Spanish were at nearby Los Adaes. The Melrose, Cherokee, Magnolia and Oaklawn Plantations along the Cane are interesting. The best place to eat barbecue is Graysons in nearby Clarence. It is not open on Mondays, so don't go there on a Monday.
