Another excellent measurement of the need (or lack of it) for a coat--what sleeping men did during BGR:

Sick or injured fellers came into my care with their gear with them. As I recall, I saw one great coat--the rest had blankets. Having planned for sick men, or ones just worn slam out, I'd packed a number of extra blankets and bed ticks. Thus, each man started the night with two blankets and something extra under him.

When I'd get up around 3 am to check on those men, they had often kicked off a blanket--and this in a camp that had a fire only when we needed to cook.

Proper, functional layers, with sufficient changes available to get wet layers dry (especially socks) will go a long way. I found my rain gear far more useful than my cold weather gear.
