There is a lot of time, effort, money required to compete for some girls and their families to compete in the preliminaries. CMN "donation", tickets, travel expenses, hotel, meals, etc. All this on top of wardrobe, talent related expenses - classes, tracks, etc. There is your platform work and scrapbook. Then you have the DoE, Gala and whatever else the Board comes up with. If you do get to compete at Miss Alabama, the additional CMN, tickets for your family, hotel and meal expenses for many families take a big amount of money.
All this on top of being a student and regular life responsibilities.
Most families spend more than the girls ever win in scholarships.
I guess you could say there is more substance to Miss Alabama, but there are more and more people that simply can't afford it or don't want to commit the amount of time and effort required. The number of contestants are down. Maybe that needs to be addressed.
