There is a lot of time, effort, money required to compete for some girls and their families to compete in the preliminaries. CMN "donation", tickets, travel expenses, hotel, meals, etc. All this on top of wardrobe, talent related expenses - classes, tracks, etc. There is your platform work and scrapbook. Then you have the DoE, Gala and whatever else the Board comes up with. If you do get to compete at Miss Alabama, the additional CMN, tickets for your family, hotel and meal expenses for many families take a big amount of money.
All this on top of being a student and regular life responsibilities.
Most families spend more than the girls ever win in scholarships.

I guess you could say there is more substance to Miss Alabama, but there are more and more people that simply can't afford it or don't want to commit the amount of time and effort required. The number of contestants are down. Maybe that needs to be addressed.

What you are saying is you can find all the money for the looks portion but can't be bothered to find the money for improving yourself through talent or helping your community through your platform?

There is a time factor here. Some people simply do not have the time and/or money to devote to Miss Alabama. That does not mean they are not talented or do not serve the community.
