I would love to see Jill Vinzant as Miss Auburn but don't know if she is competing. Of those listed above, Mi'a is hands down the winner.

Then why are they bothering having the Miss Auburn pageant if the winner is already set?

I so agree. No idea if Mi'a will win Miss Alabama ever. But she wants to be Miss Alabama so as long as she is eligible and willing to try why should she give up. Many, many, many beautiful and talented contestants never won. Mi'a is not only a beautiful young lady but she is sweet, kind, and outgoing. If not Miss Auburn hopes she wins a local and is back at Miss Alabama.

IMO if Mia would choose the right song and give up trying to sing and play piano, she could easily be our next Miss AL and do very well at Miss America. She is one of the most beautiful girls competing right now and is strong in every phase of competition.

She tied for the interview award last year with Caitlin Brunell and Katie Malone. Talent must have kept her from top five.

I will say one thing about Mi'a. My daughter competed in her first prelim and she was the only girl who spoke to my daughter, tried to get to know her and offered to help in any way. She was sweet, encouraging and my daughter now considers her a friend. Wonderful character behind the scenes and would be happy to cheer her own even if she does compete against my daughter!

Other than Courtney Porter how many girls have won Miss Alabama after multiple tries? At some point does it become a disadvantage - like always a bridesmaid, never the bride? Just curious if history shows a pattern. It seems to me most recent winners have been selected on her third try but I haven't followed the pageant long enough to know if that's true.

Meg McGuffin won her second time.
Caitlin Brunell won her third time.
Chandler Champion won her third time.
Anna Laura Bryan won on maybe her fourth time. Not sure.
Courtney Porter won on about her sixth time. Not certain.
Ashley Davis won on her second time.
Liz Cochran won on her third time.
Amanda Tapley won on her first try.
Jamie Langley won ono about her fourth or fifth time. Anyone know for sure.
Melinda Toole won on maybe her third time but was in locals a year or two before she won one.
Alexa Jones won on about her third or fourth time.
Deidre Downs won on her fifth time. And Shannon Camper was her first runner-up and it was her seventh time.

I am sure someone will correct me if any or wrong and confirm the ones I am not certain on.

Miss Fall Rush at Auburn is supposed to be 45% talent, but, as with most pageants, the interview is ultimately the most important aspect of the competition (and the contestants better know about some charity/fundraiser that pertains to the campus). Mi'A has proven that she can interview well, and she is also charming and beautiful, but the pageant is NOT based on beauty - which has been evident many years. I think that she was the correct choice for the title three years ago, and she just happened to be the prettiest.

I wish I lived closer to Mia and had the time to provide her some support and recommendations. I believe she is definitely Miss Am material and would do our state well. I agree with the poster, she needs to be an accomplished pianist or a strong vocalist... don't combine the two. Also, alittle tweaking on hair and make up could be helpful. Since I have never interviewed her, I can't make comment to vocabulary, speech, body language and delivery during interview.

At one point, I noticed Miss Alabama came from the Top 10 the previous year. However, that hasn't been true with Chandler, Caitlin, or Meg - so there goes that theory. Unfortunately, the 1st RU many times is not in the Top 10 the following year. Different set of judges - different outcome.

I shouldn't be after following this board for a while, but I am amazed that that there is such a mean hate filled person out there who is always ready to post such awful comments against whoever is named the winner. Meaness comes out of a negative history. I feel really bad for the author of such nasty remarks for whatever you experienced that has made you so bitter.

Looks like this pageant was won on points with the winner of the two highest percentage catagories being crowned. And by the way, if one judge wished to low ball someone that judges scores would be tossed having no impact on the score. Best wishes are extended to Susanna as she heads back to Miss Alabama.

This is a disgrace, Bagwell is not in the same ballpark as Callens. When I saw Trey and Wendy as a judges I knew Mia Callens wouldn't win. How did Bagwell win talent and interview? Her talent was just ok and I know for a fact her interview is weak. Two of the judges; Trey and Wendy should NOT have judgejudged. I would love to see the interview tapes I bet M'ia beat her.

The disgrace is that somebody sitting in their trailer in podunkville is voicing their opinion about what happened on a stage in Auburn. As one who was actually there, I can tell you that Mia and Susannah were the two front runners. Mia answered her OSQ well. Susannah have a more thoughtful answer. Susannah won talent. Mia won SS. That means Susannah must have won interview. Bashing the winner doesn't make the 1st RU look any better.

The pageant still uses the ranking system. Susanna and Wendy Mcdougal share common interest, tigerettes, Decatur and sorority!!! So who did she rank as number one? Bagwell! I will be so glad when the ranking system disappear.

Had the judge in your comment ranked Mia last and the other four judges had ranked Mia first, Mia would have won with a score of 41 and the next highest score that would have been possible for first alternate would have been a 30. One judge does not have as much power as you think.

The contest is subjective. When you've submitted to be a judge and you've been invited to judge - that's when your opinion will count. You'll be much happier once you learn to accept your opinion doesn't matter if you are not one of the five judges.

Callens didn't beat Kinsey either! And Miss Leeds had 5 contestants! Don't blame one or two judges for a contestant not winning when there are FIVE people who were judging and it is clear the MAJORITY of the judges saw the outcome as being clear with Susanna winning interview and talent!

If you want to show support for Callens, help her fix the things that need fixing!

Just because "your girl" doesn't win the pageant is not the judges' fault. They are not the ones performing the talent, answering the questions, and presenting themselves on stage. Some of your answers as to "why" lie in the overall presentation of the contestant in competition.

Callens will probably win Covered Bridge, Birmingham, or any one entered in the future.

How often are you in complete agreement with your four best friends or family members? I bet when discussing a pageant you may even have opposing ideas on how a contestant did. So why in the world do you people get shocked and in an up roar when five judges make a decision that you don't see eye to eye with? Get real people and stop having such huge egos that require your opinion to be the only one that could possibly be correct.

Just wait until Miss Alabama rolls around I bet Bagwell will be in the background clapping just like this summer. She won't make top 12 at Miss AL and Mia will. What does Briana Kinsey have to do with this? Briana was first runner so we would expect her to beat Mia. With this judges panel Briana wouldn't beat Susanna just like she didn't beat Danielle Dubose at Miss UA. People aren't crazy!

All you have to do is look at the flips of rankings that happened from 2012 to 2013 to 2014 to 2015 to know that some of the post here are absolutely ridiculous. Contestants know that the odds are against them from the start. It is extremely difficult to have random panels of five people to continously score a contestant in first place every single time she steps on stage. These girls competing are all accomplished and each will get the recognition she has earned. That's why there are 50 titles. Being disappointed that your contestant didn't have the good fortune of winning her desired title is not a good reason to work so hard to steal another person's joy. When Mia wins this board will be flooded from different posters airing how that choice was wrong. It's sad that there are always people eager to pull down the winner no matter who she is.

Mi'a performed a new talent song...something about underwater. There was no track. She just played and sang. She wore an orange/peach pant suit. Beautiful! The mic was not on, and she displayed incredible poise on stage until it worked.

Suzanna executed her talent well and demonstrated technicality.

Like others, I thought Erica's talent was strong. I also liked Kendyl Jones talent.

Susanna was the deserved winner last night. Meg didn't place at all when Caitlin won, then she won Miss Alabama last June. Mia will never win Miss Alabama.

Exactly. The fact that everyone accepts one "minority judge" as normal an acceptable is a shame.

There are plenty of contestants every year who are in the top five more than five times before they receive a title. Three years ago there was a girl who was first alternate more times than I can count but she never was the winner that year. Mia earned a respectable rank of 1st alternate. She was obviously liked by the judges. The other three in the top five were also in the consideration for the title. It wasn't their win last night. So what. Lots of strong contestants have shared that experience again and again. Not winning happens to everyone if you compete long enough. The "winner" should be allowed the joy of winning and the "not the winner" and their fans should just move on to the next opportunity.

Prelims hone your skills. The girl that wins first time out isn't really doing herself any favors, because she hasn't discovered how to handle all those things that can go wrong. Mi'a will win a prelim. She's gorgeous and has displayed a wonderful track record on a national pageant level. Her talent may not be serving her well. Her next director will have the opportunity to work with her on that.

I just think Mi'a's style and everything screams Miss USA. She would do amazing in that system and that is not a diss. Not sure that Miss America system will ever crown a really fashion forward, model type at least not in Miss AL. I say she should RUN to another state or switch systems.

Every contestant who enters prelims believes she is capable of fulfilling the responsibilities of the title. Every contestant is also very aware of the real possibility she may not be the one crowned. Mia is strong enough to carry the weight of not winning. Susanna is strong enough to carry the weight of serving her new title. Both girls are beautiful and talented and both should receive well wishes for this coming year.

Just curious. Is there always a minority judge for every pageant, and does that minority have to be black or can the person be another minority like Asian, Hispanic, Indian, etc.?

They can be Asian or any other race, there were no blacks one Miss AL panel this year. Generally, most pageants throw one black on the panel never seen two blacks on a panel. Directors act as if blacks will cheat or act unethical. I don't understand the whole racial make up of the judges.

I wish they would pick 6 judges 3 blacks and 3 whites, that would be a fair panel. We will have at least 4/5 blacks this year and we may not have one black judge. I assure you if there were 2/3 blacks on the panel the predominantly white pageant community would nut up.

Such a lame argument- the Miss Black America crap. Started because blacks didn't stand a chance at Miss America. That's shifting the focus. And you're admitting Miss America and Miss Alabama are for whites only. Thanks for making the point, cracker!

I don't think it is shifting the focus at all. Blacks have their own club/sorority/fraternity/pageant/NAACP/BET/whatever and nobody thinks anything of it. There is scholarship at Miss Alabama for the black contestants only. Is that fair? If I offered the same criteria and money for a white scholarship, would Miss Alabama accept the donation?
You either want to truly integrate or not. You really can't have it both ways.
I am personally sick of the race card tossed out every time a minority doesn't win. Don't like it? Then enter black events where you can feel good about a black person winning.

The point isn't "integration", it's equity. Those programs exist to support a marginalized population-black Americans. If everyone was truly treated equally, there would be no need for these programs. They exist solely to help even the playing field.

Clarification: Susanna is a member of Tiger Paws - they are the dancers at football and basketball games. Don't know if Tiger Paws were around back when Wendy was at AU.

Wendy lived in Decatur for a while, but moved before Susannah won Miss Point Mallard's OT, which was based in Decatur.

They are both members of the same sorority.

I don't know if they know each other, if they are friends, or anything else about them, but I certainly hope that Wendy, and any other judge, would vote for the contestant who she thought was the best, and I have to believe that she did.

Every contestant wanted to win Miss Auburn University, so you can't get mad at the winner and talk (post) negative things about her.
Susannah is a nice person (witness the co-win for Miss Congeniality), and a lovely dancer. I don't know about her interview, but it must have gone well. Also of note- she made Top 10 at Miss AL OT.

I have always been impressed with Mi'a. I think that she shines onstage. I was surprised that she didn't win. BUT - everyone has on off-night sometimes; I am not a judge; I was not there; and, as I stated before, Susannah is a lovely performer.

Congratulations to Susannah! And about Mi'a: she will be fine and win a crown soon. And make Top 12 at Miss AL again in 2016. And maybe Susannah will, too!

So do you honestly think Wendy Mcdougal voted against her sorority sister? Seriously? For the record, Mia didn't have an off night, in fact she was on all night. Her talent was really good she changed to a new song. I was there and for the record I'm white.

Always trying to justify who won or who didn't is energy waisted. 18 girls showed up to compete. Maybe they each had their best night ever or maybe they all had their worst night ever. Maybe each girl was happy with her placement number, maybe not. Maybe the stage was perfect for her talent selection and maybe it wasn't. Five judges showed showed up and maybe they each were totally on with their attention to each contestant in each category and maybe they weren't. Scores get tossed out in every round for every girl. Not one of the 18 contestants' score wold have been arrived at exactly as another's because of the scores tossed and because each category carries a different percentage. Every pageant is unique because it is filled with variables from start to finish. Past pageants don't matter at all. All that matters is how the variables came together on Saturday night. At the end of all the tabulation Susanna was named the winner for this event. Her abilities are supported by her past wins and many accomplishments but even that doesn't matter. All that matters is that with the set of variables in play on Sat night her over all numerical score brought her out on top. Its the same process for every event. Either be happy for the winner whoever she happens to be or go start your own national scholarship pageant and run it the way you want to so that you can manipulate that only the girl want to win will. In this system every girl has the possibility to win at any pageant and some people just can't accept that notion. I am thrilled knowing each Miss Alabama pageant is a new page with a new story about to be written.

For the record, Mia didn't do a "new" song. She did her TEEN song.

Reading the posts about how one or two judges "score" contestants is so ridiculous! Susanna won talent based on the scores of 3 judges (the high and low scores are discarded). Mia won swimsuit based on the scores of 3 judges (the high and low scores are discarded) -- and so forth for all phases of competition. It doesn't have anything to do with the color of the contestant.

If you look at a girl as a "5" when she enters the room for interview, the score either goes up or down based on her answers. This general way of "fairly" considering each contestant as a "5" at the onset of competition is a literal way of looking at each contestant being equal when they begin each phase of competition.

And, for the last time please remember that there is NO place on the judges' form in any place for points to be given or taken away based on sorority, future ambition, religion, color, shoe size, or eye color!! The judges are ask to select the best "Miss __________" and just because the girl "certain" people wanted to win doesn't then it always seems to be a racially charged, low-scoring judge who kept the girl from winning!!

ENOUGH ALREADY!!!

I'm deeply saddened of how adults are behaving on this board. The hateful name calling is embarrassing as an Alabamian. I'm sure M'ia and her family (which doesn't include me) do not want this attention and that she's happy for Susannah and has moved on and is getting ready for her next competition. Can't we all just get along? Wishing the new Miss Auburn a great year of service and wishing M'ia the best in her future competitions in her quest to get back to the Miss Alabama Stage! Red and Yellow, Black and White, THEY ARE PRECIOUS IN HIS SIGHT.....JESUS LOVES the little children of the world! I'm praying for the Miss Alabama Pageant, volunteers and supporters this is getting WAY out of hand!

I have followed this board for years and have never seen such trashy name calling and racial accusations. Unfortunately racial discord has permeated our society and has seeped over into the pageant world. Everything is racist now.
If you or your family and friends can't accept the judges decision and move on, then don't compete.

Your post is implying that this is coming from someone that competed and frankly I don't think this is coming from M'ia's camp. . They don't seem like the types to complain on a message board. They are a good family. I don't think it's a girl that competes at all. Just the same ole folks that like to keep up trouble and stir the pot! There are real instances of racial inequality that exists in the country, you are naive if you don't think so......but it wasn't the case at Miss Auburn.

I am the author of the above post. I don't think M'ia or her family would get on a message board to complain. They are too classy to do something like that. That is why it was a general contestant, family or friends message. I actually believe most of the time it is just someone that always tries to stir up racial strife whether it is pageants, politics, sports, etc.

It's hard to compete with girls whose has a dad that write big checks to Auburn University every year. It's all about politics.

While building up one, let's not trash another. Every girl participating in prelims has something positive to offer this system. We need to make sure they all know this. Trashing anyone on this board only serves to diminish the number of contestants each prelim has, which makes it that much harder to build the program.

This IS Wendy McDougal. First and foremost, I encourage any and all of you to verify this address to see that none of the above trash has come from me. It has been brought to my attention that someone is bashing both contestants who competed in Miss Auburn University, as well as, questioning my position as a judge. Let me clear the air on a few things. It was an honor and a privilege to serve on the judge's panel this past weekend. I was beyond impressed with the professionalism of this pageant, including the 19 outstanding young women competing for this title. As a former contestant, which I am assuming most of you on here are not, I appreciate the integrity of a committed and focused group of judges. I competed for many years in both the Miss America system and others, winning some and not others, and always appreciated the experience and dedication that various judges would bring, recognizing that on any given day a different contestant could rise to the occasion. Let me first address the above poster who suggested that I low balled Mi'a Callens. I know who you are, by the way, and laugh at the hilarity of your anonymity. You are a coward and know nothing about me. I pray for you and your heart.. As for Mi'a...A delight!!! I have adored her since she competed in the MAOT program. My husband can attest that any and every time I see I her, I say, "I love her!" As for partiality toward any one contestant, Mi'a, along with her sister, both attend(ed) Oak Mountain High School and have participated in show choir with both of my children for years. I think the world of their family and have worked with Cassandra on several show choir projects over the years. If fact, I have spent much more time around the Callens family than ever the Bagwells. Mi'a was exceptional on Saturday night, and obviously, did very well considering she earned a swimsuit win and finished as first runner-up. As for Susanna...she is precious as well! Let me first note that I judged Susanna earlier this summer in Miss Spirit of America, at which time she did not place. As for "connections," yes, we were in the same sorority; of which I was involved more than 30 years ago. No, I was not a majorette, nor was Susanna. She is a Tiger Paws, the AU dance team. I was a Tigerette, a football hostess--two completely different things! Please know your information before posting. What I did have a bias for on Saturday were ALL 19 of the contestants and their love for Auburn University. I left with a renewed sense of pride for my school and for the dynamic young women who represent it. It is so sad to think that ridiculous people like yourselves get on here and bash these incredible young women. I challenge you, first, to identity yourselves. Secondly, by all means feel free to contact me directly. I would be happy to discuss any of the above. Miss Alabama is and always will be near and dear to my heart; and it saddens me that people such as yourselves are involved on various levels and consider yourselves supporters. This will be my one and only post, as I honestly cannot believe I am even having to address this trash. I wish all of the contestants the best of luck and can only hope that these remarkable and impressionable young women are protected and not negatively impacted by any of you. Lastly, I do hope that the moderator of this board will one day realize how extremely detrimental this negativity is to our girls and our program. We are bigger than this. Obviously, the ones who bash on here are not. Please, please do us all a favor and do away with it.

It looks to me like if Wendy shouldn't have judged Susanna, she CERTAINLY shouldn't have judged Mia since her children went to school with Mia and were involved in the same organization. Wendy is a VERY respected former Miss Alabama and would have a lot to lose if she cheated for or against a contestant.

If you sign the affidavit saying you can be fair then it is up to the person. If we are not allowed to judge contestants we have any knowledge of you will run out of judges quickly. I do not think anyone should judge a person they are Facebook friends with. Other people think it is fine. I disagree. Does that make me right? Not to the people that think it is okay.

Well was the affidavit signed by Wendy stating that she knew the contestant(s), I'm curious? It's not that big of a deal but all judges are suppose to sign an affidavit, so if she knew the Callens or Bagwells as well as she claimed in her post she should have signed the affidavit.

All judges sign the affidavit. The rules state that a judge cannot judge a previous titleholder to which he/her served as director AND there can be no family relationship (even down to cousin) of the contestant. Other than these stipulations, there are no rules that knowing someone, kids knowing each other at school, parents knowing each other makes a judge ineligible to judge. The affidavit allows for the judge(s) to state specifically how they know the contestant. For example: My daughter takes dance at the same studio; my child attends the same school; or whatever. And, questioning the integrity of a judge when there are 5 on the panel is just ridiculous. Wendy didn't keep M'ia from winning -- M'ia did. It appears that the judges preferred Susanna's interview, talent presentation over M'ia and the FIVE judges picked her!!!

There are five judges and the low score and the high score is dropped in each phase of competition. So that means THREE JUDGES scores are counted - and who knows which ones those are - except the auditors. Wendy could have placed Mia as the winner on the top five ballot. Nobody knows but her and the auditors. Lay off her - and props to her for her post! Kudos, Wendy!

Get a list of Auburn contributors from the University if they'll release it.

A list of every contributor to Auburn University? That would be hundreds of thousands of names. Why don't you just tell us? Does the Bagwell donate to Auburn? If so, what is the surprise. Did the mom and dad go there? Haley graduated from there. Susannah is there now. The third one will probably go there. So what? Do you think the judges knew the financial information on the families. Move on.

Why of course the directors and judges know nothing about the contestants. Everything is entirely non-biased and every contestant enters and leaves on an equal playing ground. Right? Everyone agree? Obviously its ridiculous to think otherwise
