 萳•葛丁是1953 年出生於美國華盛頓特區的女性藝術家。自1969年開始接觸攝影，先後在新英格蘭攝影學院 (New England School of Photography) 和波士頓的 School of the Museum of Fine Arts 修習過攝影及藝術的課程。十四歲就翹家的她，最廣為人知的就是她那些以「第一人稱」的角度拍攝自她翹家後一起同居的那群暱友們和自己一起的生活點滴和成長歷程，包含了人妖變裝僻、物質濫用、紐約年輕人的小團體的生活等。她的照片是對她的生活的剖析，也是她對她這個世代美國次文化的觀點論述。

從波士頓到紐約，萳的照片裡的人際情感是一種曖昧不清處的關係。以一個她所拍攝的同性戀人妖朋友，也是表演藝術者的 Tabboo! (原名 Stephen Tashjian) 的照片 Jimmy Paulette and Tabboo! In the bathroom, NYC 1991為例，葛丁的鏡頭下似乎刻劃 Tabboo! 為一種在後台的「準備(preparing)」狀態，沒穿上衣服卻正畫著濃妝的 Tabboo!，身體告訴我們他無疑是個男性，然而他的肢體語言和表情卻是女性的，化著濃妝的 Tabboo! 無疑是躲在一副面具之下，存在於現實的他和他欲扮演的角色中間。另一張照片 Nan and Brian in Bed, NYC 1983 中，萳躺在床單中凝視著坐在床邊裸身抽煙的 Brian，整張照片則充滿了疏離的思緒。

早年萳原本拍攝黑白照，但不久就只有彩色作品。很多她早年的照片都用機頂閃燈拍攝，一種像生活日記的形式。或許跟 Diane Arbus 探討的人際心理和環境的觀點有些類似。近年她的照片則充滿了抒情的觀點。1995年時她和 Edmund Coulthard 合作為 BBC 製作了紀錄片「我將是你的鏡子 (I'll be your Mirror)」，1996年則出版了同名書。以下是紐約時報對這本書的書評： She is able to coax incredible energy and lyricism out of her camera. Her work is documentary in the best sense: it hews close to the world she knows, but it also indulges in the self-dramatization and pathos that together constitute a post-modern version of Romanticism.
