Well, there could be more than one answer here, and a degree of subjectivity, various opinions also. That said, my opinion follows:

1 Overall best....B) Zarkov, from a technical standpoint especially owing to his understanding of such complicated machinery, and let's face it, he even designed his own ship. He must be more mindful of passengers though, eg, turning on the oxygen, an extra seat or two...or at least straps/bars for standing.

2 I'll give...A) Flash Gordon second place for his prowess, sense of adventure, bravery, and...well, he's apparently a quick learner. Very early on, in 1936s first serial, he pilots one of Ming's ships to battle Thun's fleet. Amazing. No instructions, no GPS, squat...yes, he crashes into Thun's ship, but did well regardless.

3 Sgt.Tim...a little known stratosled pilot, having a bobble head statue of Emperor Ming on the ship's dashboard, is uncredited (unfilmed as well) but word has it he was present, rose thru the ranks quickly and and is nearing ace status according to palace hallway gossip.

(A) Flash Gordon, for his intrepid bravery and quick-study adaptability. Pretty good flying for a polo player!

(B) Zarkov and (D) Captain Torch would be close contenders as well.

Modesty precludes me from voting for myself (L), although if only that dashboard bobble head could talk, the tales he could tell!
