Subject: Breck Eisner Talks New 'Flash Gordon' Movie

Source: Moviefone
By Simon Abrams

If you haven't by now seen director Breck Eisner's superb remake of The Crazies or Sahara before that, you probably don't know why the guy is a real talent and someone to keep an eye on. Neither film made major bank but both of them are razor-sharp meat-and-potatoes films that are lightyears ahead of most any other comparable American genre films. News of the next Eisner-helmed project should be met with much anticipation. Accordingly, Airlock Alpha's recent item on Eisner's next project is very exciting indeed.

Eisner has confirmed that he is now working on a new Flash Gordon movie, one that is obliged not to have anything to do with Mike Hodges' adaptation from 1980. Eisner had talked about the project before but now it looks like he's moving ahead with it. Check out highlights of Airlock Alpha's piece after the jump.

The comic from 1930s was made into serials in the '50s and '70s, then the director's version in the '80s...It was campy and the effects were not so good - this version is in no way a remake.
"Our version goes back to strips from '30s and we will update those and shoot the movie as if the strips were drawn today. It will be an action and adventure sci-fi."
"It will be a standalone story, it definitely won't be left open for more, but the ultimate goal is to turn it into a franchise."
"It will be an origins story for Flash. He's going to Mongo, he's gonna save the planet and it will have a superhero buy in and will be unique. It is very much a superhero origins story."
"I was originally involved with Battlestar Galactica and broke the initial script with Ron Moore...He made it edgy and it goes to show that if you have the right DNA in a project, then you can do something amazing.
"Technology does now what comic books used to do. What was done with pen and ink is now done with actors and we turn comic book adventures into a real experience. Avatar proved that."

In looking on the web, it seems a 3D CG loaded movie may arrive sometime in the future. I gather it will be based on original Alex Raymond comic strips. These are indeed colorful, adventure strips from the 30s, with many characters, kingdoms, monsters, traps, machines, futuristic devices, romance. In thinking of them, I imagine CG would be necessary and heavily utilized.

The comics are lengthy covering a few years, with much to cover. If the movie is to stand alone, without sequels, it will likely be long, but probably not long enough to cover all unless overly fast paced with choppy 2 second long scenes, extreme close ups, maybe too loud, rapid, and dark. The term Franchise was used, but in what context? There is a lot of territory to cover in the Sunday comics by A.R. and just the 1st trip to Mongo. (Yes, there was a brief 2nd trip in the comics, but Ming seemingly disappeared earlier, on 1st trip in the Sunday strips.)

To do this up right, sequels as in Star Trek movies, Star Trek, Superman, and other super heros might be considered. I cannot see jamming it all into a single long movie.

For several years, we've heard of FG movies to be, but sadly, they never materialized. For some of us die hard fans who fondly remember the comics, pulps, serials, old TV shows, animation, older movies, now the web/forums, we reminisce and replay/reread old materials...some just hoping for colorized renditions of old serials or enhanced dvds, maybe just books reprints.

If a movie is planned, do it right, do it soon, and please remember an important part, at least in the beloved serials with Buster Crabbe, was the music Universal used. Ok, talk is cheap..you want to do an FG movie, do your homework, get fan info, know what was done right/wrong before, and get a move on...we aren't getting younger. You'll have plenty in just selecting key cast members. Keep details in mind.

Best get moving Mr. Eisner, good luck in your endeavor, and check our site here for some good info and feedback if you like. The smarts are with us. :)
