Subject: Quiz, Comments, Discussion-1936 Serial

Here's a lengthy, long overdue quiz. Open to all. For each posting, correct answer, clever wisecrack, educational tidbit, neat trivia thing, anything positive, award yourself 100 Mingols, redeemable at Ming's souveneir shop on planet Mongo, or at the Heh Heh Lounge. Supply own transportation. Do your best, interactive chit chat a plus. Answers, more or less, next Thurs of so, to give time for added questions, comments, by members, visitors, fans. Good, clean material and clever fun stuff desired whenever possible. Questions here may range from brilliant/hard, laced with trivia, to silly/ambiguous, maybe incorrect! If a wisecrack comes your way, don't take it personal, this is supposed to be all in fun. If you have time, post...even if it's a comment, or a question to the question. So, with these preliminaries in mind, let's begin. This will be limited to the 1936 serial for now, and the questions are in no particular order. Many are the completion type to promote flexibility. Have fun.

9.Why does Dale Arden nearly faint in Zarkov's ship enroute to Mongo.__________________________

10. Any idea where "The Tunnel of Terror" used in the FG serial is on earth?

11.When Ming first places (unguarded mind you) Zarkov in his lab for the first time, do you recognize the set from any particular horror/drama kind of movie? What___________

12. a)Re the lab machinery, any idea of who created these things? b).. and, if any, name some Universal horror/drama movie where they were used.

13. Multiple choice. (check all that apply) At the sky city, Vultan primarily tries to win Dale over with.. a)Orso, b)a shadow puppet show, c)jewels, d)a feast

14.At what point, or event, in serial does Barin tell Flash he is in love with Princess Aura.______________

15. Who or what is Zona, and in what kingdom do we see. Any connection or event with Dale? If so, what. NO, answer is NOT a Zona saw.

16. Anything seem odd or peculiar about how Thun swordfights Flash upon first meeting after the crash landing (with no one apparently injured in horrific crash).

17. a) Who was the only one who seems to have been thrown out of the seat in the turbulance the transatlantic airplane encountered. b)aircraft buffs...any idea what kind of plane was likely used?

18. Try this...Charles Middleton who played Ming the Merciless was grandson to one of the signers of our Declaration of Independence. T or F

19.When do we see Ted Lorch as high priest.

20.Does Prince Thun ever go to Ming's palace after the sky city Tournament? If so, when.

21. What is Flash Gordon doing to Officer Torch (me!) as he becomes visible.

22.Why was Jean Rogers hair dyed blond for her part as Dale Arden in the serial.

23.What keeps the huge lizards from entering or destroying Zarkov's rocket..a)Zarkov locked the door securely, b)a Ming rocket fires on them, c)they become distracted and just walk away, d)none of these.

24. After sky city, when FG is offered to select the bride of his choice, he is drugged by Aura. Best choice..She uses: a)the Incense of Forgetfullness, b) only Drops of Forgetfullness, c)the Dehumanizer, d)some kind of Drops of Forgetfullness and Pills given to Aura by the high priest, played by Ted Lorch.

25 Combo. a)Dale was horrifically mauled (T or F) by the Tigron ( a tiger in the serial with one horn, like a Unicorn...T or F....tricky, watch), released by the Tigron's mistress on orders by Ming (T or F). The Tigron picked up the scent from Dale's shoe (T or F).

No mere mortal stands a chance against such a devilish test! I fear Ming will condemn us all upon our almost certain failure. Nevertheless, I will redouble my study of the sacred FG texts in order that mankind have a chance of survival. Perhaps Dr. Zarkov can come up with a mind enhancing ray.

Great quiz questions, Officer Torch! I think I can confidently answer some of these right off the bat without going to the serial to confirm (alright, I did check the serial for question 5).

2. Barin's father was killed by Ming.

3. Flash Gordon said "Keep your slimy hands off her" to Ming early in the serial, when Ming displayed an obvious interest in Dale Arden.

4. Tao is from Universal's The Mummy (1932). The footage of The Oracle surrounded by gyrating females is from the early science fiction film Just Imagine (1930), which is not a Universal production.

5. I almost said true, but took a quick look back at chapter 13 first. The answer is false, it was King Vultan.

6. False. Thun saved Flash from the gocko, using a rifle-ray gun.

9. Dale nearly faints because Zarkov forget to turn the oxygen supply on.

13. a, b and d for sure. Not sure about c.

14. There is a sword tournament between Flash and Barin, although at first Flash doesn't know it's Barin he is fighting. After the tournament Barin tells Flash that he loves Princess Aura.

15. The attractive Zona is one of King Kala's subjects. She is with Dale while Flash is almost drowned in a flooded tank.

16. Thun keeps his hand on the sword sheath during the fight. Also, there is only one sword.

21. Flash is choking Torch when he becomes visible again.

24. Flash is given the Drops of Fogetfulness. Which means he can't answer the questions in this quiz, heh!

Quiz Answers, Comments

1. The High Priest, specifically the 2nd (crafty) one, a part nicely played by Ted Lorch.

2. Barin said Ming killed his father.

3. Flash tells Ming (at first meeting in palace) as Ming lusts for Dale. Soon, Flash is thrown into arena to battle monkey men.

4. The huge idol, referred to as the oracle, surrounded by dancing women, was from a (somewhat bizarre)1930 musical, by Fox Film Corp called Just Imagine. Zarkov's rocket was also more or less from that movie, and some other sets. (Some of the futuristic art deco type building sets were later evident in Universal's 1939 Buck Rogers.)The smaller idol later seen eg in the wedding ceremony was of Amon-Ra from Universal's 1932 "The Mummy."

5. False. It's easy to get tripped up on this (ask me how I know) perhaps because of the similarity of the costumes, and they sometimes look even more similar in b&w for some reason. But, it's Vultan who was doing the choking.

6. False... Thun saved Flash using a rifle type ray gun.

7. You can see her double while they (Tigron trainer and Aura) are in the tunnel looking where Barin hid Dale. The tigron picks up the scent from Dale's sandle given to the trainer earlier by Aura. Watch Aura after the tigron leaves the trainer.

8. Metropolis, 1927 silent film by Fritz Lang.

9. Because in all the excitement, Zarkov forgot to turn on the oxygen.

10. Bronson Canyon, a popular site for filming such fare, and especially Westerns. (I believe Commander Rick had some pictures posted of the area.)

11. My understanding lab was from set of 1936s The Invisible Ray.

12. My understanding lab machinery by Kenneth Strickfadden, and such equipment can also be seen in Universal movies such as Frankenstein and others.

13. Well...this could be one of those gray area ones...but yeah, I guess we could include a)Orso, b), c), and....well, dunno about d)...let's face it, Vultan feasts. OK..open for debate, or we'll void the question, and I'll eat crow.

14. At the Tournament of Death where Flash swordfights a hooded Barin....during the excuse segment I believe, after Flash removes Barin's hood, is when Barin reveals his love for Princess Aura.

15. Zona is an attractive woman, a subject of King Kala in the water kingdom. She is with Dale while Flash is nearly drowned in a tank, and later has a scuffle of sorts as I recall with Dale.

16. Well, there is one sword, and it belongs to Thun, until Flash gets ahold of it. Curiously, though, during the fight, Thun has his left hand on his scabbord, or sheath, nearly the whole time! (Geez..talk about trivia.)

17. a)Dale Arden b)likely a Ford Tri-Motor

18. True. I understand he was a grandson to Arthur Middleton.

19. We see him around the time Flash does battle with the orangopoid.

20. We see Thun and his lionmen attack Ming's palace throne room near the end of the serial.

21. Yeah...he's choking me... Officer Torch.

22. My understanding is that Jean Roger's hair was dyed blond to have the character Dale Arden look closer to the popular Jean Harlow.

23. b) Ming ship, with me (Officer Torch) and my two soldiers (buckethead twins)fire on the lizards, then collect the earth people for delivery to Ming.

24. Well, maybe I eat crow again. It's NOT a) or c) Ok...here's the story. The high priest gives Aura 2 kinds of pills to spike wine..one type of pill for making Flash go into a deep sleep, another to make him forget when he awakens. The drugged wine is brought to him by a guard on Aura's order, and it has the desired effect, for awhile anyway. In the Chapter 10 Foreward, we read that he was drugged with the..and I quote the quote..."drops of forgetfulness." We also hear this a few times in the dialog, but if you listen closely, sometime the word drops...said by Barin, sounds like draughts....as in a beverage. Of course, those pills would result in a drugged beverage. Ahh...dunno..any comments, let's have 'em.

25. a) Dale didn't seem to have a scratch on her...so I'd say False. The Tigron in the serial looks like a regular tiger..note however, that in the comics, the Tigrons have horns. In the serial, the Tigron has no horn. It is released by the mistress, or trainer, NOT on Ming's order, but on Princess Aura's order. The Tigron apparently picked up on the scent from Dale's sandle or shoe presented to it earlier.

__________________________________________________________

As always, comments, debate, questions, corrections, encouraged. Will discuss more later on. Thank you, and hope perhaps you've enjoyed this, and hope for more dialog. Heh, heh.

I am amazed and gratified at the magnificent response of Tim to the fiendish quiz posted by that crafty Officer Torch. Officer Torch may appear at times to be assisting our compatriots on this site but everything that transpires here is immediately communicated by Officer Torch to our sworn enemy, Emperor Ming.

I nominate Tim to the inner sanctum of FG followers, a very select and proven group of knowledgeable colleagues of our interplanetary hero. Let it be noted here that I myself was first admitted into this group only a short time ago after following Flash for over fifty years, being first exposed to our leader on Buster Crabbe's own TV show in 1952. It has taken me all these years of study to dare to present myself for combat on this site.

Congratulations once again to Tim! May the Light Bridge never fail to support you in your adventures!

The Answers:

1.) He's referring to the High Priest

2.) Barin's father was killed by Ming when he was a child.

3.) Flash said this to Ming when they first met in the throne room in CH 1.

4.) The large idol and its erotically-attributed dancers was built for the FOX film, 'Just Imagine' (1930) and used as stock footage in the 1936 serial. Re-used in the 1940 serial. The smaller idol was a set prop from 'The Mummy' (1932).

5.) False. Vultan strangled the High Priest and then stopped.

6.) False. It was Prince Thun who stopped the Gocko.

7.) CH 12 and the 13 recap sequence in the catacombs with the tame tiger who played the Tigron. Also, stock shots of the tiger were culled most likely from 'Tarzan the Tiger' (1929).

8.) The set prop was built for the film 'Metropolis' (1927).

9.) Lack of oxygen due to Zarkov's failure to turn the oxygen supply on, as they are passing through the Death Zone, as they are leaving the Earth.

10.) The location shots of the tunnel were shot at Bronson Canyon and in one of the caves. I know the place well.

11.) The interior set was built for 'The Invisible Ray' (1936).

12.) Ken Strickfadden, one of Universal's electricians. Seen in 'Frankenstein' (1931) and 'Bride of Frankenstein' (1935) as well as in other horror films.

13.) All apply to our fine-feathered friend.

14.) CH 8 after Flash defeats him in the tournament as they are waiting for Flash to fight the Orangupoid.

15.) Zona is one of King Kala's handmaidens and henchwomen. She was involved with Dale in most cases, like when she was holding her captive to watch Flash fight the Octosac. She was later put out of commission by Aura, in a fight as the palace was about to be flooded.

16.) Thun was holding onto his scabbard and using the sword to lunge until Flash took it away and beat him in the fight and they became allies.

17.) Dale of course, so Flash could meet her!

18.) True. He was the grandson of Arthur Middleton and grandfather to Burr Middleton, whom I know.

19.) You see him first appear in CH 8.

20.) Yes, in CH 13 to combat Ming.

21.) Strangulation to Torch!

22.) Dyed blonde as the film studios would use blonde as a purity in associating with a hero in male and female actors, just as actors with dark hair were cast as heavies. Also, the blonde was a carry-over from Jean Harlow, who was a big movie actress at the time.

23.) A: the Ming ship kills them with the ray.

24.) First, the pills to drug Flash and Barin as they have a victory drink (that is spiked) and they fall asleep. Then, the Drops of Forgetfullnes were administered to a semi-conscious Flash by Aura and the High Priest as they were about to enter the Tunnel of Terror, so Aura could take Flash for herself. The High Priest, in fear of being executed for exposing the secret of how to slay the Orangupoid to Aura, sounds the Sacred Gong and the Fire Dragon wakes up when news breaks out Barin and party are coming.

25.) The Tigron was given one of Dale's sandals by its Mistress and picked up her scent in the catacombs and found her. This was arranged by Aura with the Tigron's Mistress in private. The animal was sans a horn and by the time it could do anything serious, Flash had contained and killed it as "The Prowling Monster" cue can be heard from TWOL (1935). Dale: "Flash, you killed him!"

Rick (who is now ready for the Healing Vapors!), but as promised, I did it.

Great to see the answers to a difficult but educational quiz, Officer Torch! I have learned much here, although I undoubtedly need to devote many more hours to studying the sacred FG texts earlier cited by Prince Barin.

I am kicking myself for not answering number 12, as I have read about Kenneth Strickfadden numerous times!

I was definitely a bit off the mark on questions 13 and 24. On 24 I should have answered (d) Drops of Forgetfullness and Pills given to Aura by the high priest. There is no call for you to eat crow, Officer Torch, and I cannot eat crow either, because King Vultan has eaten all of it already, heh!

Regarding question 22, I have seen a few panels from the famous Alex Raymond strip, and of course Dale Arden was far from blonde in it. The Jean Harlow influence makes sense, as she was still a major screen siren at the time of FG '36. It's interesting to note that after Harlow died in 1937, Dale Arden dropped the blonde look for Trip to Mars in 1938.

[> [> Re: Quiz, Comments, Discussion-1936 Serial -- Rick, 04:55:26 12/12/08 Fri [1]

Yeah, I'm tardy-- I'll get around to it.

Jean had her hair dyed a little darker brown in 1937 when she was working on a Universal film and Mars at the same time, so it stayed that color and was shorter at the time. In FG 36, it was dyed, toned and short, but the hair extensions made it look longer than it appeared and matched in color starting in Chapter 2. They curled her hair and the extensions for a fuller look.

Her natural hair color was light/medium brown and for the 37' picture and Mars, she went a little darker in color.

Carol Hughes in the 1940 serial film looked virtually the same as Dale in Raymond's comic strip at age 29. They couldn't have found one who had such a great resemblance, just as Buster did to Flash.

Memo
From: Emperor Ming
To: Tim

Tim:
This is your Emperor speaking...Ming...Emperor of the Universe. My trustworthy Officer Torch is typing this as I speak. I presume you are reading this on your televisor.

At this time, I wish to congratulate you for your bravery in posting answers to the recent quiz. You answered many, and most were correct or reasonably so, with highly intelligent comments and honesty. You will be royally rewarded. Simply save this Memo and consider it a voucher when you visit my souveneer shop on Mongo*. Present it to the desk captain of the guard.

This serves as a promotion for you to serve in the IOQM, that is, the Imperial Order of Quizmeisters of Mongo. Alternatively, should you refuse to consider studying the sacred scriptures and further adventures on planet Mongo, there are alternatives as gifts...eg, a 7 day pass to Vultan's sky city with daily shadow puppet shows, by Vultan himself. You will of course be served refreshment sitting next to Orso...specifically, a large jar of honey.

Other options include: a position in Kala's kingdom tightening bolts, and inspecting for corrosion, or a supervisory position in cleaning the gocko's cave. (A brand new shovel is included.) In the giftware dept, you can choose from: Kra-Z Mongo Glue, the same used by Thun on his sword sheath, or Octosac repellent, flying dragon leg (as often enjoyed by Vultan), or other items. Our residents from Mongo can assist, eg, try asking the high priest for tips or any of my trustworthy subjects. Heh.

Emperor Ming

*Note: Supply own R/T transportation. (We can only provide 1 Way...inbound.)
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hey! Tim! Torch here...with congrats for a job nicely done. There's quite a bit to this FG "stuff" in many areas...I'll save the sales pitch. You did very well, and hope to see you around Mongo here often. Regards to you, and all, from Officer Torch.

My thanks to Commander Rick, Prince Barin and Officer Torch (and yes, even the Merciless Ming!) for the kind words and invitations. I would be proud to join the inner sanctum of FG followers (as Barin kindly suggested) and serve in the IOQM (which beats eating honey next to Orso any day, heh!).

Commander Rick aced the quiz, as I knew he would, but if Officer Torch reads his answer to question 21 out of context...look out!
