Layout, details likely best answered by A.R. comic gurus on FG, but I can provide some info, and ... this is early from 1934 in the Sunday strip.

The term "tunnel of terror" was in the strip early in 1934. Flash communicates with Dale using the "thought projector" in Prince Thun's wrecked space gyro. Flash discovers from captured Dale there is a tunnel south of the city. He finds it, with Thun, and the tunnel is flanked by two golden dragon statues. They enter and a face Tsak, the two-headed guardian of "the tunnel of terror." Tsak is struck down, Thun is wounded, Flash carries him onward, overpassing water dragons, going thru whirlpools, and arriving at a large underground room containing "two sacred droks" (beasts). Meanwhile, the wall opens and Ming sends a potential victim. Thun recovers, the snarling droks are overtaken, and also a couple of Ming's soldiers thru the tunnel. Victorious, Flash and Thun continue and find a door, left open. They entered and found it led behind a huge idol in the Emperor's Palace. Flash then sees Ming and Dale approaching the idol (and priest) for the wedding ceremony. A scuffle takes place, but Flash and Dale escape using a trap door which was beneath the overturned idol (Tao). Unfortunately, as they climb down a rope ladder, a soldier cuts it, and they plunge down into an underground river, go thru various obstacles, and are then captured by the sharkmen.

Hope this was of some help..there are parallels with the serials to a point for awhile, especially near the beginning. Seems we can count on various passageways, obstacles, monsters and things in the Palace's basement, in the comics and the serial.

Thank you, Torch. They tunnel continuity in AR's strip follows closely to that seen in the 1936 serial. Some exemptions apply in the serial, but they did it very well.
