Subject: The Tunnel of Terror

This second chapter introduces more new characters and concepts to the uninitated Flash viewer. This is when I realized just how devious and duplicitous Princess Aura is.

Flash and Dale don their futuristic attire for the first time. Flash finds his on Zarkov's rocketship, while Dale is forced to wear clothing given to her by Ming and his minions.

We meet the High Priest, and see poor Dale subjected to the dehumanizer. Shades of Dr Adams' neural neutralizer!

When the gyroships of the Lion Men attack, Flash finds himself defending Ming's empire to save his friends Dale and Zarkov. I was surprised that Flash could pilot the rocketship and operate its weaponry so quickly and skillfully! But then he is Flash Gordon.

Thun, Prince of the Lion Men, makes his debut, a fun new character and a great ally for Flash.

The dehumanized Dale Arden is almost wed to merciless Ming, as the 13th stroke of the sacred gong will complete the ceremony.

One memorable scene from this chapter features The Oracle surrounded by undulating beauties, a spicy display of eroticism and pagan idolatry. Quite a striking and effective image.

Tim...FYI, a few years back, we had some lively forums on Flash Gordon material. While this material was always sought after, I think VHS, and especially DVD ramped things up. Frankly, some forums evolved and livened up, along with DVD releases, the internet growth and participation, and frankly, we not only learned "stuff" but had lots of laughs, sometimes bellylaughs! We had/gave quizzes, learned about comics, cartoons, TV series, movies, music, trivia galore. Friendships were made, worldwide in fact!

Times change, priorities, etc, but the core material is still there, in fact, there's more around now. Again, check those links on Rick's in the Flash Gordon section. I don't want to create spoilers, so I won't recommend too much now, but if you'd like a few chuckles, check out Judy Harris' site. There are many other good ones; will yak later.

Master cartoon artist Alex Raymond started the FG comic strip in 1934 (A book, When Worlds Collide in 1933 was a big influence; and George Pal made a movie in 1951). There was an early radio series about FG, and the first serial with Buster Crabbe and cast in 1936. They used Roman garb...I've heard because of leftovers from oldie sword and sandle movies of the day, but also that they wanted some influence from mythology. (All kinds of opinions....hey, this material is way vintage.) Costumes were to change, and you'll see a big departure by the last serial in 1940. There are some parallels between comics and the serials; there are also differences...often substantial. Hey, if you'd like to see some parallels, check out link on Rick's called Spitfires of the Spaceways.

There might have been a 4th serial were it not for WWII. George Lucas wanted to make a movie, but licensing issues were involved. Note however how often you'll detect FG type moments in his Star Wars. We'll keep in touch.
