I suspect A.R.s Ming in the comics paid moreso lip service to Zogi, the High Priest. A few times, Zogi informed Ming of the rights, including those of traitors, according to holy writ and scrolls of the great god Tao.

In the Sunday comics of June 10, 1934, Zogi is conducting the wedding ceremony of Ming and Dale before the idol of Tao. Tao seems to start talking and Dale recognizes it's really the voice of Flash Gordon. Ming tells those gathered a stone idol can't talk, and upon seeing a door open, with Flash and friends, Ming orders them shot. BUT, Gogi said "Wait" (which they did) and again quoted holy scrolls..he indicated to drop their weapons, or Tao will curse them all!

This angered Ming who indicates that he will shut Zogi's jabbering mouth forever for daring to defy him (Ming). Ming runs a sword through Zogi. Ming then informs FG, Barin, and Thun that Tao forbids him to slay them, but both Ming and Tao will both laugh when the rebel slaves die in the prison city of the Hawkmen, but Dale will be taught to act like his (Ming's)empress.

Dunno, but I'd say no high priest had authority over Ming. Let us perhaps remember Ming's saying...."I AM THE UNIVERSE"
