The 1960's opened with Miss Argentina, Norma Gladys Cappagli, winning the title. Her path to victory was not an easy one. Threatened with disqualification because she liked to hoist a scotch or two at the end of a long day of rehearsal, Norma fought back. She demanded to know, "Where does it say in the rules that I can be disqualified for having a late night drink if I want one?" Apparently, nothing in the rules did address this issue and she went on to victory.

Later in the 1960's a new kind of scandal would rock the Miss World Pageant - nude photos of two Miss Worlds surfaced. The two ladies in question, Miss World 1965 and Miss World 1969, would find themselves embarrassed by photos they had posed for before becoming Miss World. It was the word "before" that saved them both from having to be dethroned.

With the crowning of Miss UK, Lesley Langley, as Miss World 1965, came the criticism that the pageant might be fixed. Miss Langley was the third Miss United Kingdom to win the title in five years.

Could things get any worse? You bet.

Glebova could still open the festival, organizers were told, but under strict conditions. She couldn't wear her sash or tiara, and couldn't be referred to as either Miss Universe or a beauty queen.


Instead, organizers were told, they could refer to her as"an individual of note contributing to our community."




Miss Universe has been branded too sexist to open a cultural festival in Canada because she broke laws against sexual stereotyping.
Canadian Miss Natalie Glebova was to open the Thai culture festival sporting her official beauty queen's regalia near Toronto.
But the local authorities said her regalia sexually stereotyped women and they forced her not to wear it.
The regulations act against activities which degrade men and women through sexual stereotypes or exploit their bodies to attract attention.
Miss Glebova won the international beauty competition in Bangkok in May.
The 23-year-old blue-eyed brunette was made to remove her Miss Universe sash, though not without complaint.
Russian-born Miss Glebova, a graduate of the University of Toronto, said: "It was like a knife to my heart.
"It seemed so silly. Everywhere else, I get a great reaction from political leaders. But my hometown?
"I definitely don't think that the Miss Universe title is any kind of stereotype or sexual stereotype."
Officials of the Miss Universe organisation were also unhappy.
Paula Shugart, president of the organisation, said: "It's a strict reading of the by-laws.
"According to those conditions, a beauty contest cannot even be held in Toronto."

I have often heard the story of the rustic but extremely beautiful young girl from rural Spain who slipped in through the cracks, somehow got into the Miss Universe contest, won first prize and then turned out to be a common prostitute who quickly dropped out.
Because of this incident and scandal, since then there has been careful monitoring of all the young women who get into major beauty contests.

Naturally, having an inquiring mind and with the resources of the Internet now available, I decided to check out this story last night. I found out that information about this subject was relatively hard to obtain. I learned from a Philippines web site of all places the name of the woman in question. I made a long search for photos. Finally, I found some. They were very hard to download, so I stole ‘em, and here they are.

What really surprised me is that she did not just drop out and disappear, the story I had always heard. Rather, she became a major film star in Spain. She has now starred in 22 Spanish language motion pictures, not counting the porn movies which she also made.

Spain's Amparo Muñoz won in 1974. She did not finish her reign, but became a soft porn star and made one movie in the Philippines where she was involved in a slapping incident and scandal involving money. Amparo Munoz is still a film star in Spain and starred in three 1996 movies, including: Lycantropus - The Full Moon Murders, and Familia, even though she is 43 years old! (She was born on 22 June 1954 in Málaga, Spain).

Many Puerto Rican fashion designers criticized her choice of outfit for Miss Universe's finale, saying that her wearing a black dress hampered her opportunity to become elected Miss Universe. However, it turns out that Cynthia's black dress was never really her choice, it was the pageant directors and her design crew who insisted she must wear such. Rumors spread about the national director Magali Febles bias as she heads two Miss Universe affiliated contests at the same time - Miss Puerto Rico Universe and Miss Dominicana Universe.

On September of 2005, Olavarria sued Febles for the amount of 2 million dollars, alleging mistreatment by Febles as well as favoritism by Febles towards Miss Dominican Republic. She also alleged that past Miss Puerto Ricos managed by Febles had been managed the same way. Febles countered by saying on national television that she does not have that amount of money and by allegedly sending one of her representantives to force Olavarria to give up her title as Miss Puerto Rico during one of Olavarria's personal presentations.

She would later allegedly gain more ad more weight reaching an all time high of 150 lbs. which led to speculations of stripping Alicia of her crown. Undaunted, Alicia succumbed to the media blitz and crowned her successor a year later 10 to 15 lbs heavier than on the night she herself captured the Universe.

Shortly after her crowning, Machado was asked what she would do now that she was Miss Universe. She immediately replied in Spanish "eat! Eat! Eat!". The heavy schedule of her new responsibilities as Miss Universe left little time for the intensive weight-control program that had previously undertaken, and she soon gained several pounds. The Kellogg Company, breaking a contract, withdrew the planned production of "Special K" breakfast cereal boxes featuring Machado's photo. Donald Trump referred to her publicly as an "eating machine," insisting that winners of the title have an "obligation to stay in a perfect physical state." Finally, when Machado had gained a total of 40 pounds, Pageant officials insisted that she lose 27 pounds in two weeks or lose her title. With the help of aerobics instructor Edward Jackowski, (who determined that Machado's ideal weight was somewhere between 125 and 130, not the 118 pounds she had been when she won the title), she managed to lose weight and retain her crown.

One of the most controversial beauty queens in history, she has followed a short television career with a new foray into music. In 2004 she launched the Latin American segment of her new album by performing onstage at the Miss Venezuela pageant, appearing as an honored guest along with the country's first Miss Universe, Maritza Sayalero.

Among the controversies that have followed her career is a supposed rivalry with fellow former Miss Universe Amelia Vega, who is also breaking into the Latin American music industry. Another was the breakup of her engagement to major-league baseball star Bobby Abreu in May 2005. Abreu, an idol in the Latin world and an icon in Venezuela, split with Machado after she was filmed being intimate with another man on La Granja ("the farm"), a Spanish program similar to Big Brother. They had been planning to marry in December.

During 2004–2005, she pursued a career as a TV commercial model with particular success in promoting a dieting product.

Alicia appeared on the cover of the Mexican edition of Playboy magazine for the February issue of 2006. By doing so, she became the first and only Miss Universe in history to do so.

On February 19, 2006, Alicia debuted on a Mexican Reality Show named Cantando Por Un Sueño (Singing For A Dream) a program in the line of the previous Bailando Por Un Sueño (Dancing For A Dream) where the winner have the chance for a dream to be true, it is very similar to Dancing with the Stars (USA) and Mira Quién Baila (Spain).

I posted a message last night in response to a picture where Ana Igpit was placing her crown on some fugly guy's head. Some people said that she shouldn't do that. I said that it's okay because they can always buy another one from the website I showed them. If the crown is unique to Bb. Pilipinas and is encrusted with real gems, crystals, diamonds, pearls, or what not, then she should handle it with care. Ang pootcha, dinelete ang aking post at ako ay blinock. Sumali ng dalawang beses sa BB Pilipinas, ngunit sa 2 beses, nabigyan ng pagkakataon na manalo.Nagkalat sa Miss Universe 1988, at ginanap pa rin naman sa Taiwan kung saan marami Pilipino. Apat na Asians ang nakuha, pero wla man lang binatbat. Habang naglalakad ang reigning Miss Universe na si Cecilia Bollocco, kapansinpansin ang paglingon nya, habang umaakyat si Cecilia patungong trono nya.

Jennifer Cortez - Eto yung mukhang inaantok. Ewan ko ba bakit nanalo to. Kahit sa pelikula nyang Temptation Island, kung saan sya rin ang nanalo sa beauty pageant, sa tingin ko mas deserving pa manalo alalay nya na si Deborah Sun. Si Azenith Briones na ayaw manalo, natalo nya pa. ganun din si Dina Bonnevie at Bambi Arambulo. Para nga syang Japanese Cartoon character, kung nanood kayo dati ng cartoon way back 80's na pamagat ay "Ron-Ron, the flower Angel".

3. Violet Naluz-Sino ba naman makakalimut sa babae na to na sa parade of the nation, binandera nya yung "I represent the People Power of the Philippines" Sa apelyido nya pa lang ovious na na-lost. Ewan ko ba bakit tinalo nya si Alice Dixson.

4. Liza Padua-eto sya yata ang nag-break ng record nung 70's na di makasama sa top 12 for the first time, na ginanap pa naman sa Hong Kong. Galit na galit mga pinoy sa kanya na kulang na lang batohin sya ng saging pagbaba sa Manila International Airport.

5. Liza Berroya-isa pa tong pandak na Ilongga na to. Di man lang naka-eksena ng konti, kahit nag-ballet sya sa intermission number.

Originally titled the "Festival Bikini Contest"at the 1951 Festival of Britain, the competition was quickly renamed Miss World by the press. 28 women gathered in London to compete for this new title. Each of them appeared in bikinis. The lovely entrant from Sweden, Kiki Haakanson, won over the judges and was the first to hold the title Miss World.

Eric Morley, founder of the pageant, had intended the contest to be a one-time event, but when the Miss Universe Pageant was established in 1952, he decided to also make Miss World an annual pageant. But by the time the second Miss World Pageant was held in 1952, trouble was brewing. Countries with strong Catholic populations, such as Ireland and Spain, let it be know that they would not send delegates if the contestants were seen in bikinis. In an effort to appease these nations, the bikini was officially banned from the pageant. Alas, Kiki was the first - and last - Miss World to be crowned in a bikini.

Things were not all roses at the 1953 pageant, either. At least not for Miss Egypt, Marina Papaelia. Convinced that she should win, she sensed things were not going her way during the finals of the pageant. She refused to come out of her dressing room during the swimsuit competition and stopped the show for ten minutes before agreeing to come out. When the announcement of the winner came, that she was only the third runner up and that Miss France, Denise Perrier was the victor, she went ballistic. She screamed across the stage in her accented English, "I think she steeenk!" She then proceeded to collapse onto the stage and writhe about in one of the greatest displays of poor loserdom ever! "Get the picture? Yes, we see!"

Venezuela's Miss Universe 1996, Joseph Alicia Machado has been charged with complicity in a kidnap and attempted murder case at Caracas Criminal Court No.16 along with her fiance, Juan Francisco Rodriguez Reggeti ... the alleged perpetrator!

Restaurant owner Juan Bautista Rodriguez Arzola and two daughters have also been implicated in the case -- while Juan Francisco Rodriguez Reggeti stands accused of shooting his brother-in-law, Francisco Antonio Sbert Jofre, who survived with two bullets wounds to the head.

Although details of events leading up to the abduction and attempted murder remain confused, the suicide of Rodriguez Reggeti's sister and the victim Sbert Jofre's wife, María Carolina Rodriguez Reggeti, and the future of the couple's daughter (15 months) is central to the investigations.

Judge Maximiliano Fuenmayor has ordered the Police Detective Branch (PTJ) Homicide Division to undertake further ballistic tests and investigations to collect evidence that he believes is missing from the dossier.

Rodriguez Reggeti and 10 other people, witnesses and family members, have been called to give testimony.

Former Miss Universe Joseph Alicia Machado did NOT appear in court, but Judge Maximiliano Fuenmayor has ordered her and the others to appear before his court on Monday (January 26).

The USA's Marjorie Wallace was the first American winner of the Miss World title, beating 53 other competitors. She was stripped of her title 104 days later, in March 1974, because she "had failed to fulfill the basic requirements of the job." The head-strong, fun-loving Marjorie was unable to cope with fame and engaged in a series of high-living exploits with prominent music and sports figures that brought disrepute to her title. Other sources claim that the real reason behind her losing her crown was a statement she made in one of her public appearances. Marjorie would have said, "As Miss World I can get laid with any man I pick". It is said that she had affairs with famous car racers, actors and singers. Well, keep in mind she was a queen in the early 70s. Miss Jamaica, the 2nd runner-up, fulfilled Miss World's obligation without having never been officially crowned Miss World as 1st runner-up Evangeline Pascual of the Philippines refused the crown.
