Subject: Score one for the little guy!

Scott was taking an algebra class this past semester and it was the last class he needed for his Associate's degree. Crazy stuff was happening at work and he had to miss a lot of Saturday classes and his professor was very accomodating and allowed him to make stuff up. He gave him until the end of February to take all the tests and the final which HE DID. He took them all and ended up with a C and his professor changed his "incomplete" to a "C" and we thought that was the end of that.

So today he went in to find out about graduation and also to sign up for summer session but was told that there was a hold on his account and he wasn't allowed to enroll until he paid $225 for having an incomplete grade last semester. Say what? So he called and spoke to the Director of Financial Aid who told him in no uncertain terms that his final grade was to be entered by January 6 and too bad, so sad.

Well, we knew nothing about that date and as far as Scott was concerned, his professor gave him an extension that he DID meet. So *I* called the good old Director of Financial Aid who was less than happy to hear from me since he already explained it all to Scott. He told me (several times) that the final grade had to be entered by January 6 and it wasn't so Scott was on financial aid disqualification for unofficial withdrawal. Unofficial withrdrawal?? How could you say he was withdrawn when he TOOK A CLASS that semester? Yes, I understand that there was a deadline but he got an extension from his professor and as far as he knew, that was all he needed.

So I asked the Director what recourse I had and he said I didn't. Umm, that is not a good thing to say to me. He said they had to pay back the federal government because they'd sent financial aid for a class he didn't take. (that he DID take..are you keeping up with this?) So I said the Federal gov't owes him that money back because he DID take the class. And of course, he said, it doesn't work that way. So he tells me I can try calling the Department of Education with a tone in his voice that sounds very much like "Good luck with that, lady!"

I don't want to pay $225 for not taking a class that WAS TAKEN.

Sooo, I called 1-800-4-AID and spoke with a very nice guy there who was very understanding, although unable to help me. He did say he felt I had a legitimate complaint because the professor gave him an extension. So I called the University back and asked to whom the Director of Financial Aid reports. That would be the VP of Finance. So I called him. But he wasn't there. I told my whole story to his admin assist and she asked if I had talked to the Financial Controller yet. I had not so she gave me that name and number and I made my umpteenth call. Voicemail. Grrrr. BUT, lo and behold, she called me back. And what did she say? She said she believed "the situation" had all been taken care of and my husband should have an email confirming that. Which he did. ;D

Some how the words "You have no recourse" makes you that much more determined. Glad you proved him wrong.
