Subject: The boy and his dog had a bit of a mishap

JJ was playing with Roxy (our 75+ lb lab mix) out in the snow last night. She chases him around and he wrestles with her and they have a good old time. Well...last night he fell on his back and she romped over to jump on him, thinking he was playing. But he'd lost his balance and wasn't paying attention and she went flying right into his face. He got a bloody nose and a big scratch on his chin and somehow she shoved the top wire from his braces RIGHT UP AND UNDER HIS GUM. It swelled up so big and was all purple with blood under the skin and it looked so horrible we didn't know if the wire had broken and was stabbed into his gum (which was what it looked like) or if it was truly UNDER his gum because it sure looked like it was poking right through It was REALLY gross. And, of course, it was at 6 p.m. when all the dentists were closed. We pondered waiting until this morning to take him to the orthodontist but I was concerned with infection (dogs foot shoved his braces up into a now-open wounded gum) and my mom reminded me how quickly mouth wounds heal so we were also a little worried that the gum would "heal" around the wire. So off to the ER we went. Considering that he's a VERY active boy who just turned 11, I thought it wasn't too shabby that we made it all the way to 11 without having been to the ER before So 4.5 hours later (who knew the ER in Minot, ND would be that busy at 7 o'clock on a Wednesday night?) we had a prescription for TWO antibiotics in hand but they wouldn't touch the wire. In fact when I asked the doctor if the wire was THRU his gum or UNDER it, he said he wasn't sure and "This is veryyyy unusual......" Such comforting words from your doctor. Hahahahahaha. Sooooo we went into the orthodontist this morning and they took him right in (which was fun since there were about 15 people in the waiting room) and they had to dope him up to get the wire out of there..it was shoved wayyyy up and under. Even the orthodontist said he had never seen anything like it. Oy. My poor baby cried for the first time during the whole ordeal when they were pulling that wire out from under his gum, dope or no dope.

Lesson learned? I doubt it. He loves wrestling with that dog!

..based on your last sentence I'm glad he doesn't take it out on the dog and not want to be around her. I'm sure it was unintentional, as you say; just a quirky accident. Hope he feels better soon!!

He came home today and gave her a big hug and told her he knew it wasn't her fault! :)

Her dog bopped her in the mouth and she had to get several stitches. I can not believe you made it until he was 11 without a visit to the ER!I hope everything heals well and boy and dog are back at play in no time.

I got hit in the mouth with a Frisbee when I wore braces. A piece of the Frisbee ended up stuck in the wires of mine. That hurt a lot, but it was nothing compared to JJ's ordeal.
