Subject: i hate (most) mechanics

Here is the whole story, tell me if I have a right to be mad or not.
I got my (used) car back in February, and it had a 3 month warranty on it. The first thing I did was take it to the nearby garage to get things checked out, they said it was okay. In March, I could feel and hear a vibration, and my radiator fluid was a little low, the heater was not working well. I asked them to look at the entire heating/ cooling system, since it was still under warranty. They said it was just a loose hose.
I usually don't drive very much, just around town, to work and back.
I drove to Grand Rapids last weekend, a trip of about 100 highway miles. At the end of my trip, that is when the temperature light goes on. I took it to the same garage on Monday, and now they tell me the water pump failed and the head gasket is blown. To the tune of $1400, and at least 3 days without a car. This is 5000 miles after they said they checked the cooling system, and the work is only guaranteed for 4000 miles.
My feeling in the pit of my stomach says that they did not listen to what I wanted to be checked out before, and just fixed the first thing they saw. Do you think that I am being taken for an expensive ride or am I just looking for someone to blame?

Thanks for any comments.

they are looking to blame something else now so you will have to pay for it. I would check with the Better Business bureau. You can always threaten to call them and see if the Garage might be willing to do something, sometimes the threat makes them sit up and listen. It has worked for me in the past...good luck...and I hate mechanics too...most of them. They sure have us over a barrel, because we are so helpless and needy at the same time. I had one tell me once when I questioned a "job"... "if you keep driving it without it being fixed you are endangering your children"I left and found another mechanic who said nothing was wrong and to this day I have not had the part fixed and the car is 10 years old...pisses me off.

I found a "shade tree" mechanic that will do it for not much money. Getting it towed there tomorrow.

I am not going over to that other garage again, and I will write a review at cars.com.
