Subject: I've been having weird dreams. I know they have to do with Chris leaving

I can't really remember them. I just wake up and the first thing I think is that Chris will be leaving for college soon. They aren't sad dreams, just kind of "preparation" dreams, I guess.

Our living room is filled with stuff Chris is taking with him and he hasn't even started packing any clothes yet. His dad wants him to take a bunch of stuff. Chris and I keep pointing out that he doesn't really need a winter coat or many winter clothes since he will be coming home in two weeks.

Chris is excited to start college. I think the idea of independence (with a safety net) is intriguing to him. I do wish people would stop telling me how much I am going to miss him, though. I think I might already know that.

How are the rest of you moms doing with your college kids gone.

This is week 4 of class for M@ (been gone since 8/18). We never see him or hear from him unless he needs something. We've seen him about 3 hours since school has started. Right now all he cares about is when his new iPod will get here (it's in Anchorage; I just checked) - it's his big 18th bday present from last month.

It's very quiet around the house, but it's 'predictable' as far as who is home when and who will be at meals, etc. I'm getting used to it but it's definitely different.

We have no clue how he's doing in school (I'm NOT looking!), but he has a new gf (from Chicago) and has pledged and gotten into a frat (I NEVER expected this). I just hope he realizes the reason he's there - I'm sure he does but as he left he was just so excited to finally be 'independent' and leave home...sigh...

Just FYI, the frat he's in (Alpha Delta Gamma) is at a Jesuit university and under their scrutiny, so hopefully it's a good influence - their national and local websites are VERY impressive, and thankfully M@ hates drinking (but has his vices), so we'll just have to see. Their philanthropic org is Habitat for Humanity; I hope he helps with stuff like that!

My Chris has been gone since Sept. 2. He absolutely loves it up there, like I knew he would. It helps a lot to know he's happy! We text several times a day and we also have a Skype account but haven't used that much. And of course there's Facebook!

Chris has joined UCF (University Christian Fellowship) and that's helping him meet people and be connected, too. He'll also get to play his guitar there. I'm glad he's already found a church home.

No girlfriend so far and I'm kind of hoping it stays that way for awhile! He's going to play on the open hockey league and has asked us to bring his hockey stuff up soon. I'm not sure exactly *how* soon; we are busy the next two Saturdays and would prefer not to drive up and back on a Sunday. He has no plans to come home until Thanksgiving, but we'll see how that goes. He does have connections for rides home and the bus is pretty cheap for students, too.

So far, so good. I miss Chris a lot but I'm so excited for him to have moved into this next phase of his life. I know he'll thrive.
