The D refers to Diesel. In the case of D1 - D4, the trains were DMUs of particular formations. For instance, D1 was a formation that consisted of one power car and one trailer car, or multiples thereof. D5 was the Manchester Pulman.

The other D numbers, D350, D550, etc., refered to the loading of diesel hauled trains.
