I can now provide a lot more information. I remember hearing about the accident now when I was a railwayman. You had me confused because I thought you meant that it happened on the MSJ&A at Timperley. It didn't, as the following email from a friend shows:

"Hi. Brian,

It was as you say in 1964 at Broadheath No 3 signal box on the Arpley line. A freight train driven by Percy Gordon and Fireman Jimmy Berry of Edgeley Loco arrived at Broadheath No 3 and the signalman who was a relief man signalled to them that he wanted to temporarily cross them over to the down line to allow him to accept and pass the Up York Mail 22:40 from Liverpool Lime St. He asked them to draw forward over the crossover after which he pulled the points. Inavertantly he thought that the points were double ended and that one lever worked both the facing and trailing ends, in fact he only pulled over the trailing end and when he gave a hand signal to the train crew to set back they actually set back on the same line. The signals were not track circuited and he pulled off for the mail hauled by Jubilee 45695 Minotaur crewed by Farnley Junction men. The mail crashed in to rear of the freight train at line speed of 40 miles per hour, I think it brought down a bridge, however afterwards the loco was put in a siding and some time later broken up on site. After all this time I can't remember what happened to the crew of the mail. One thing I can't to this day understand why Jimmy Berry didn't go to the signal box and sign the book to verify that they had taken their train completely through the crossing on to the down line. The mail train had just recently stopped carrying passengers however I do know the guard was Walter Durr of Edgeley one time councillor and mayor of Stockport, but he was not injured. I believe there is something in Back Track magazine vol.18 page 621 if you can get hold of it but I don't possess it.

Hope you find this satisfactory,

Eddie"
