I think lures are an excellent option and as i said before i fish them whenever i think the times right.I just bought a huge hangar style box with 100 assorted jerks,plugs,spinnerbaits and spoons for a bargain price so i'm gonna start using them in situations where i wouldnt normally ....to see how they all act and if they will induce any more takes than normal on my club water.
I dont think that they totally take the place of deads though....i think theres room for them both in different situations, its a totally different method.
