Hey Billy.......The pike will start thinking about spawning round about now and with more than just food on their mind they can sometimes prove hard to catch !! If you take a walk over the dam and look into and onto the shallow overflow there you will probably see large females with attendant males.

They are that pre-occupied with 'gettin' it on' that chasing down food is sometimes too much for them (especially the big, spawn laden females)so rather than putting a normal sized bait of ,say, a whole joey or large Roach - try giving them a snack instead of a meal in the form of a small smelt or maybe a Roach head or Small Perch.

The Pike look amazing at this time of year(pre-spawning)and their markings become more vivid and to me seem more glossy, weighty and bright eyed, this is probably 'cause theJacks are gagging for it !......some beautiful fish can be caught at this time of year though!!

Dont get dis-heartned Billy.....try walking up to were the pine trees have fallen into the water and fish fairly close in as this is a hotspot because the contours below surface are more or less 40 ish degrees all the way to the middle were it climbs towards the far bank, and this is a patrol route for the Pike (and were the Roach often shoal up)and my fave area!

All the best Billy......and remember that if it was easy they would call it 'catching' and not 'fishing' !!
