Hi Paul, and thanks for your interest in the site and forum!

The short answer to your questio is no. When I go out for a session I always use at least a 3b TC rod and 25lb braid. If you use this strength of gear you have all your bass covered and there is no fear of you damaging a fish due to bite offs.There is nothing worse than finding a dead Pike amongst the reeds in the margins ,and it has a trace hanging from its mouth with its throat literally stitched shut.....a sad site!!
If all Pikers used the correct gear and correct knots this would not happen.

If you know the water you are going to fish though, you should know if the water contains loads of large Pike or if its mostly 8-10 lb fish.In this case, fish accordingly using lighter line for instance (I would still use at least a 2 1/2 TC rod though). A specimen Pike will take the same bait as a small Jack so you should be prepared.
