this is how I figured it:
The girl allegedly killed her own sister because the guy was a con artist. He met the mother on a cruise and found out she had a lot of money. He found out that her two single, homely, alcoholic daughters with no prospects were the sole heirs to her fortune. He then killed the mother on purpose by giving her a heart attack during a marathon tantric sex session on the cruise, pocketing the jewelry she had on her person.
Then he went to work on daughter #1 at the funeral, charming her pants off (in the coat closet, followed by marathon tantric sex sessions).
He soon conned her into signing a power-of-attorney document granting him full power over her own bank account, telling her that he was in Construction and was thus a accounting buff who knew how to hide money (inherited or otherwise) from the IRS. Because she was so head-over-heels, she did this without pause.
Daughter #1 was ruled out as a suspect after the discovery of the murder of her sister, daughter #2 (killed brutally with some kind of blade) because she had an airtight alibi the night of the murder (she was really at an AA meeting while he did the deed). No weapon was recovered at the scene, and even though one of her ginsu knives was conspicuously missing from her knife block, detectives couldn't make it stick. Because the murder happened before the mother's Last Will & Testament was probated, her entire estate defaulted to daughter #1, by rights of survivorship.
The day the mother's inheritance money was deposited into the surviving daughter's bank account, our con artist fucked the shit out of her (quickly, but for good measure) and took off for the bank, emptying her account legally. Later that morning he dropped the murder weapon (her own ginsu knife with her own fingerprints and her own sister's blood all over it) into a corner mailbox addressed to the local cops.
He skipped off to the Hamptons, a huge bag of loot and fake ID in hand, and bought a house with cash just as nice as those in Beverly Hills...fuck California.
