Subject: Hospice service

Vanco,

We need to know his family background. If he is single and had no money. Probably he needs to apply CSSA after returned to HK. One of the way (not a proper way) is after he returned to HK, go directly to one of the accident and emergency department with all the records and CT films regarding to his HCC. Most of the time the AED officer will admit him as inpatient(at least in QMH). Then he can see the medical social worker to apply for CSSA and look for placement during his in-patient stay. As he has poor prognosis, the MO will discharge him very soon. But if he said he had no place to live, they will probably transfer him to noin-acute hospital, e.g. Tung Wah Hospital for QMH. At there, the MO may apply hospice for him. But usually hospice will not available immediately. In real situation, patient always die in these non-acute hospital when they are waiting for hospice. Or frequently, the aim of such transferral to non-acute hospital is for palliative care which serve the purpose of hospice. Of course, the proper way is to contact the doctors in HK before his return and arrange everything. But without seeing the patient and all the records, it is not appropriate and officially not possible to arrange and directly admit a patient to hospice. More supplement, there is no age limit for hospice. But they have selection criteria in which if one is to ill, they won't accept. The number of hospice bed is very limited in HK. So non-acute hospital always take up the role of hospice. But the admission is always through acute hospital.
So, in simple words, he can return to HK anytime and go to AED and request for admission. All arrangements have to go through an acute hospital.
You can see my email address. You can add me on MSN.

Yours,
Phenytoin
